If you want to understand the heart of this country, a pilgrimage to Thaba Bosiu is essential.
Standing at the Birthplace of a Nation 👑
Located just outside Maseru, Thaba Bosiu is a sacred sandstone plateau known as the birthplace of the Basotho nation. In the early 19th century, King Moshoeshoe I brought his people to this flat-topped mountain, using its steep natural cliffs to create a legendary, impregnable stronghold.
The Magic of the "Mountain at Night" 🌙
Local legend says the mountain earned its name—meaning Mountain at Night—because it magically grew taller in the dark to deter invaders. Standing atop the windy plateau, surrounded by ancient stone walls, royal burial grounds, and wide views of the valley, the history here feels alive.
