Morija Guest Houses & Tours The Morija Guest House overlooks the historic village of Morija, in the Lesotho Lowlands (45 km from the capital Maseru). Morija itself is a very special place.

Below the main house, there are small cottages to welcome more visitors. The Guest House can comfortably accomodate 24 people. Founded by French Missionaries in 1833, it earned the Sesotho title 'Selibeng sa Thuto' - 'The Well-Spring of Learning'. The buildings and institutions founded by the missionaries - including the Church, the Printing Works and a number of high schools - continue to be cent

ral to the town today. It is also home to the Morija Museum & Archives, and since 1999 has hosted an annual Arts and Cultural Festival, the largest cultural festival in Lesotho. For those interested in outdoor activities, Morija and its surroundings are perfect for hiking - whether it's to the dams just above the Guest House, to a nearby rock with impressive dinosaur footprints, to the top of the Makhoarane Plateau overlooking Morija, or further afield! We also offer guided horse-rides - for a few hours or for overnight trips with a night spent in a local village. For those with the right equipment, this is also perfect terrain for mountain biking or rock climbing! We also organise special weekends, some to introduce visitors to the language and the culture of Lesotho, and others to teach French, with accommodation, meals and activities all being included. Feeling soooo sorry for Donald Trump and all those who laughed when he made that speech in Congress the other day. Imagine, they have “never heard of” Lesotho! In other words, they don’t even know that Lesotho exists!

Imagine not knowing about our magnificent landscapes, amazing mountains, spectacular sunsets, pure air, beautiful villages and most of all friendly people who, by the way, have shown a remarkable ability to welcome and integrate foreigners for over 200 years.

This is a country which has managed to maintain its own culture even though it’s surrounded by another country. Of course you need to know a bit of geography to know this basic fact, and clearly the American President and many members of the US Congress don’t…

But fortunately many Americans DO, and they DO know where Lesotho is! Not only the present US Ambassador in Lesotho, the past ambassadors and all their staff, but also the hundreds of US Peace Corps volunteers who have served in Lesotho for the last 60 years of so. Plus the US teachers, doctors, journalists, artists, writers, film-makers, musicians and many, many more who know and love this country, who have worked here or simply visited. Imagine what they thought when they heard their president saying that nobody had ever heard of Lesotho!

If you read this post, chances are that you HAVE heard of Lesotho. So tell others what a beautiful country it is, in whatever season, and tell them to come and visit too!!

We are lucky at Morija Guest Houses to have great cooking and baking staff, especially when it comes to liphaphatha! When Mme Marari makes these delicious small breads, the whole house is filled with the most wonderful smell. Then our guests can enjoy her superb liphaphatha (dipapata in simplified pronunciation) at breakfast or in sandwiches 🙂
