The 2016 Solstice Festival Līgo on the Embankment

The Līgo festival, dedicated to the shortest night of the year when the nature and fertility are praised, has been celebrated in Latvia since ancient times. Bonfires, beer and cheese, flower crowns and singing are part and parcel of the festival.

Celebration of the traditional Latvian pagan Līgo! festivity at the shortest night of the year dates back centuries, and its main idea is to praise the nature and fertility. Bonfires, beer, caraway cheese, flower crowns, and Līgo! songs are the key features of the festival. Nowadays, you do not have to go to the countryside to greet the sunrise the following day — Jāņi Day. A large-scale celebration will take place in the Old Riga, by the Daugava River, on 23 June.

Here you will see the very best of the Līgo! traditions — tasty food, masters of Latvian traditional folk song, famous artists, and just the nice crowd, who want to enjoy at full the magic of this special night. The festivities will take place on the right bank of the river in the evening of 23 June and will go on until dawn. You will have an opportunity to play traditional games and learn more about the rituals, for example, jumping over bonfire, dancing and singing all night long. Making of cheese, beer brewing and learning how to find the legendary fern blossom are also on the programme.

As usual, beer, caraway cheese and bacon-filled pies will be offered to all those attending the festivities. Folklore groups and ensembles will be explaining Latvian traditions; pop musicians will be performing their wide selection of songs — from rock to schlager. The Līgo! night is usually rainy, according to the tradition, but do not worry: all those celebrating at the Daugava River are welcome to take shelter in cosy tents.

Night of Museums 2016

Latvia's museums and other troves of cultural heritage, and its promoters, this year will compel us to carefully keep an eye on Doors - those that lead to the museum itself, those in permanent collections as valuable feats of artistry and technical prowess. Doors in a non-material sense; the ones that open-close with ease, or those that always remain shut, or the ones with a deadly draft.

Night of Museums is held simultaneously in all European countries free of charge.

In 2014, this event focused on Amber, as a Latvian cultural symbol.

Riga Restaurant week

Riga Restaurant Week takes place twice a year, in spring and in autumn. In 2016 there will be 2 restaurant weeks:

16th - 22nd of May
and
10th - 16th of October.

During this special week, Riga’s restaurants open their doors to all gourmands willing to treat themselves to an array of delicious tastes for an especially affordable price of 15–20 euros for a three-course meal.

For the entire week, all the city’s residents and guests have the chance to enjoy the season’s best foods prepared by experienced and innovative chefs who give each meal a modern and sophisticated twist.

Riga Jazz Stage 2016

The aim of the international jazz artist competition “Riga Jazz Stage” is to offer young musicians an opportunity to try their luck in an international competition against young jazz performers from various countries.

Besides the regular nomination "Jazz Vocal", new instrumental nominations are introduced every year. In 2016, the new nomination is "Jazz Trombone". Participating in the competition will be young performers from Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, Turkey, Uzbekistan, the United Kingdom, and US.

The international jazz artist competition "Riga Jazz Stage 2016" - cinema "Splendid Palace".

Semifinal - April 7, at 19:00;

Final - April 8, at 19:00;

Award ceremony - April 9, at 19:00, featuring live performance by "Charenee Wade Quartet" (US).

Improvisation nights of the international artist competition "Riga Jazz Stage 2016" - music house "Daile".

On April 6, 8, and 9. Open daily from 19:00, jam session starts at 20:00.

Easter celebrations at Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum
27 March 10:00 - 16:00

Easter at the museum combines ancient Latvian, Christian, and contemporary traditions. Church service in Usma Church is at 10 a.m. One has to rise early on Easter to be fresh and happy for the next twelve months. Eggs are decorated and people ride swings at the market square. There are songs, games, storytelling and other events organised by folklore groups. An exhibition of Easter toys at the museum's exhibition hall. Easter meals at the Priede Pub. Arts and crafts fair.
