About the ZagoraDesert

The Zagora Desert is a beautiful and accessible desert area located about 360 km south of Marrakech, in the Draa Valley region. It’s often called the “gateway to the Sahara”, offering a great first desert experience for travelers who don’t have enough time to go all the way to Merzouga.

From Marrakech, it takes about 6 to 7 hours to reach Zagora by road.

The route crosses the High Atlas Mountains, through the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2260m) and the scenic Draa Valley, dotted with palm groves and ancient kasbahs.

The dunes in Zagora are smaller and rockier compared to the big golden dunes of Merzouga, but they still offer a true desert experience.

💡 When to Visit

The best time is September to May, when the weather is pleasant (warm days, cool nights).

In summer (June–August), temperatures can reach 45°C, so early morning or sunset activities are recommended.

Marrakech To Chegaga in 03 days by bus, camel & Safari and 4x4

Marrakech - Ait Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate - Agdz - Zagora

The tour starts at 7.30 am with your departure from Marrakech to Zagora in a minibus. On the way you will go through the Tizi N Tichka path, in order to get the Tamdakhte Kasbah and the one at Ait Ben Haddou. There, you will visit this UNESCO world heritage site and continue the journey to Ouarzazate and Agdez, where you will enjoy a panoramic view on the Draa valley. Then, you will follow this valley until Tansikht, where you will be able to discover kasbahs and typical village along the Draa valley until Zagora. From there, you will enjoy an hour camel ride with your guide and get to the authentic desert camp. This Bedouin camp is made in a traditional berbere style and this is where you will spend good time and share the nomad life with your guides. At diner you will eat a typical meal with Moroccan tea minth, hearing saharian music around a fire camp. Finally you will spend the night in your tent

Zagora - Tamegroute - Mhamid - Chegaga - Erglihoudi

After seeing a beautiful sunrise over the dunes, you will be back to your 4x4 and it will be the start of the moroccan saharian desert discovery and of course the famous Chegaga which count the biggest sand dunes of Morocco, with more than 300m high. Then you will visit the coran library and the small steets underground, before going to the village called Mhamid via one the most beautiful part . When you will arrive at Mhamid, which is the last village before the Saharian immensity, you will go through a road with sand, famous because of the Paris-Dakar rallye going there,

After arrival you will enjoy your lunch : salads, mixt meat, season fruits and tea; Then you will be able to walk in the big dunes or practice sand-boarding before coming back to your 4x4 to join the desert place where you will spend the night under the stars sky in authentic tents: erg Lihoudi. The sunset won’t be missed and you will admire the beautiful big dunes of Lihoudi. On the night, around a fire, typical diner and traditional songs and music.

Departure in the early morning to get Zagora in 4x4, and to join your minibus and driver to come back to Marrakech via the Draa valley and the Taourirte Kasbah.

Départ tôt le matin, nous traverserons le Haut Atlas et atteindrons le col de Tizi N'Tichka, haut de 2260 mètres. Continuation jusqu’à la Kasbah d'Ait Ben Haddou, nous visiterons ce merveilleux Ksar qui est inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco. Plusieurs films sont tournés dans ce décor: the mommy, Gladiator, Seven years in Tibet, Babel…Après le déjeuner en face du Ksar continuation vers Zagora en longeant la vallée du Draâ, oasis presque ininterrompu... 5 Km après Zagora, randonnée à dos de dromadaire d’environ 1h, dans un environnement de nature exceptionnel, où l'air est si pur, que la vue et les sons portent à des centaines de kilomètres, où il y a un silence que rien ne trouble, où l'on pourrait s'entendre penser… Nous assisterons au coucher de soleil, dîner et nuit à Zagora.

2eme jour : Zagora – La Vallée de Draa – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

Après le petit déjeuner, découverte de la palmeraie et de sa population, un patrimoine culturel riche et diversifié...déjeuner à Ouarzazate et visite d’orientation de la ville (Kasbah de Taourirt et Studios de cinéma) puis retour à Marrakech via le col de Tichka.
