⛪ St. Tryphon’s Cathedral: The Heart of Kotor Old Town
Standing proudly in the centre of Kotor Old Town, St. Tryphon’s Cathedral is the symbol of Kotor’s history, resilience, and identity.
Built in 1166, the cathedral is one of the oldest Romanesque landmarks on the Adriatic coast and has watched over Kotor Old Town for more than 850 years. Dedicated to Saint Tryhon (Sveti Tripun), the patron saint and protector of Kotor, the cathedral was built on the site of an earlier 9th-century church that housed the saint’s sacred relics.
Over the centuries, St. Tryphon’s Cathedral survived devastating earthquakes, foreign rulers, and changing empires. The twin bell towers that dominate Kotor Old Town today were rebuilt after major earthquake damage, becoming one of the most recognizable sights in Montenegro.
Step inside and you’ll discover medieval frescoes, centuries-old stonework, religious treasures, and relics that tell the story of Kotor’s rich maritime past. For generations of sailors arriving in the Bay of Kotor, the cathedral served as both a spiritual sanctuary and a symbol that they had safely arrived home.
Today, St. Tryphon’s Cathedral remains the most important landmark in Kotor Old Town and one of the most photographed locations in Montenegro. Whether you’re exploring the narrow stone streets, admiring the architecture, or learning about the history of the Bay of Kotor, no visit to Kotor Old Town is complete without standing in Cathedral Square and taking in this extraordinary monument.
