Mandrare River Camp

Mandrare River Camp A luxury camp with 7 tents on the banks of the majestic Mandrare River.

Luxury tented camping at it finest, interweaving unique wildlife, local culture and ecotourism…

As the sun rises over rugged mountains, fingers of orange light sparkle across the river to awaken the forest and camp within. The distant singing of the local tribe as they fetch water from the river, the morning calls of the Coucal and Crested Coua, welcome you to another glorious day on the banks of

the Mandrare River. Our luxury en-suite tents are generously spread out in the shade of tamarind trees, all with breathtaking views across the tranquil water to the sacred mountains beyond. The seclusion of the camp affords intimate access and insight to the spiny forest; home to an abundance of unique wildlife and the fascinating Antandroy tribe that co-habit this arid and otherworldly landscape.

In the Mandrare region of southern Madagascar, nature is more than landscape — it is memory, spirit, and identity.

1. Sacred Rivers & Water Sources
The Mandrare River is believed to carry ancestral spirits, making certain waters sacred and deeply respected by local communities.

2. Sacred Forests (Ala Fady)
These protected forests are forbidden to disturb — cutting trees or hunting inside is considered disrespectful to the ancestors and spirits who guard them.

3. Baobab Trees
Ancient baobabs are seen as symbols of wisdom, life, and resilience, standing proudly through centuries of drought and history.

4. Burial Sites & Ancestral Lands
Nature surrounding ancestral tombs is sacred, reminding communities of the strong spiritual connection between the living and their ancestors.

5. Lemurs & Protected Animals
In some local beliefs, lemurs are linked to ancestral stories, which is why harming them is considered fady (taboo).

These traditions, called fady, have protected Madagascar’s nature for generations — long before conservation had a name.

The Spiny Forest with the Verreaux' Sifaka is unique to Southern Madagascar and our guests at Mandrare River Lodge frequent the Ifotaka Community Forest.

📷In the spiny forests of Madagascar, even the plants wear armour. But here, the Verreaux’s sifaka moves with grace, leaping effortlessly between daggered branches, defying gravity and logic. Ifotaka Community Forest, Madagascar. © Tomasz Szpila (Photographer of the Year 2025 entry)
