🏞️ Explore the History of Zavoj: A Derbendci Village 🏰

Did you know that the village of Zavoj holds a unique historical significance? In addition to its natural beauty, Zavoj was also designated as a Derbendci village during the time of the Ottoman Empire. Allow us to take you on a journey through time and uncover this intriguing aspect of our village's heritage.

During the Ottoman era, the Derbendci villagers were exempted from various taxes in exchange for providing essential services to the empire. One of their primary responsibilities was to guard the mountain passes, ensuring the safety of the region. This duty granted them exemptions from war taxes, customary taxes, and even the devşirme system.

In northern Macedonia alone, approximately 175 villages enjoyed the privileged status of being Derbendci villages, including Zavoj. This special designation brought tax relief and allowed the villagers to focus on their vital role in maintaining security and constructing vital infrastructure.

The Derbendci villagers formed organized units known as "tabl," consisting of 30 men who took turns patrolling the assigned territories. While they initially carried light weapons, they eventually incorporated fi****ms into their arsenal. Interestingly, a significant number of Derbendci were Christians, enabling them to ride horses and carry conventional weapons.

As the Ottoman Empire faced challenges in the late 17th century, they hired mercenaries to supplement the Derbendci forces and ensure their loyalty. Nevertheless, the Derbendci villagers played a crucial role in safeguarding the region and maintaining stability.

Today, the village of Zavoj stands as a proud testament to its Derbendci heritage. We invite you to visit us and witness the traces of this rich history that have shaped our community.
