Church of Saint John the Theologian at Kaneo

Perched high above the crystal waters of Lake Ohrid, the Church of Saint John the Theologian at Kaneo is one of the most iconic landmarks in North Macedonia.

Lake Ohrid is a tectonic lake, formed by movements in the Earth’s crust. According to the 2017 SCOPSCO project — Scientific Collaboration on Past Speciation Conditions in Lake Ohrid — the lake was formed approximately 1.9 to 1.3 million years ago, with the most widely accepted estimate being around 1.36 million years.

This makes Lake Ohrid:

• The oldest continuously existing lake in Europe
• One of the oldest lakes in the world
• Home to more than 300 endemic species, many of which evolved within the lake throughout its long geological history
