Access to the sea is still restricted for fishermen in Rakhine state, so villagers try to catch some small fish from the shore in front of Lalay Lodge.
These are extremely challenging times and we do hope the situation will improve soon.

😮‍💨Roads and water ways throughout Rakhine state are still closed off and the prices of food, fuel etc is increasing.

💁🏻‍♂️Maung Shwe Lay village is not connected to the electricity grid and the village-generator stopped running, as the fuel cost is too high. Lalay Lodge decided to step-in and set-up a free mobile phone charging station supplied by our solar system.

We are glad to see it’s eagerly used every day by the community. We can’t serve international tourists, yet we are glad that at least we can try to support others.❤️

The "paper flower tree" (bougainvillea) is in full bloom, first time since we opened just before Covid. Big thanks to the great staff from the Maung Shwe Lay community for sending us pictures. Unfortunately it's not possible to receive visitors at Lalay Lodge at the moment. Hope for positive changes soon.

The view will always stay the same, our in-house security dog Wonky will be on stand-by and the Maung Shwe Lay team will keep maintaining the lodge. We're here, but unfortunately all roads and waterways leading to Lalay Lodge are blocked for the moment, so it's not possible to reach us. We will let you know as soon as it's possible again to visit us.

🎣🧜‍♂️The fishermen of Maung Shwe Lay don't go out too far on the sea during the raining season as they wait for the rains to pass. It means more activities from the villagers on the beach. Come visit us, also in this season!💁

Luckily no damage from the cyclone in our part of Rakhine state (but a lot of damage up north unfortunately). The green season has arrived at Lalay Lodge which means sometimes sun and sometimes rain. A fantastic period for longs walks on the peninsula, relaxing and reading books and go for swims in the sea. During this period, we have packed the upstairs rooms and only the downstair rooms are available. The vibe is different, the village feels livelier as the fishermen don't go out in this period.

We are bracing ourselves for and packed up the lodge, also for the green season. Thank you for all message of concern from clients; we think we will be fine as we're in a protected bay. We are more concerned for the safety of the people in Northern Rakhine state as the cyclone is expected to make landfall near Sittwe. Do reach out if anyone needs shelter the coming days.
