🐫 Where the Gobi Comes Alive 🇲🇳

There is something special about experiencing the Gobi in winter.

The desert becomes quieter, the air turns crisp, and across the wide open landscape you’ll see one of the animals that has been part of Gobi life for generations: the Bactrian camel. 🐫

With their two humps and remarkable ability to adapt to Mongolia’s harsh desert climate, Bactrian camels are an important part of the lives and livelihoods of many Gobi herding families.

Each year, the Ten Thousand Camel Festival brings camel herders and their families together in South Gobi to celebrate this unique part of Mongolian heritage. 🇲🇳

You can watch camel racing, camel polo and camel relay competitions, join the camel parade, see traditional games, and meet local people who have grown up with these remarkable animals. 🐫❤️

But beyond the races and celebrations, there is something even more meaningful about being there.

You get to see the relationship between the Gobi, its people, and their camels for yourself.

24 Days of unforgettable Mongolia 🇲🇳

It was a real pleasure having Moni Arataki and his wife Ester from New Zealand 🇳🇿 spend around 24 days travelling through Mongolia with us.

Over those weeks, they explored different parts of the country, experienced Mongolia’s landscapes and culture, and shared many memorable moments along the way.

They also stayed with us at Fairfield Guesthouse, making it a place to rest, recharge, enjoy good food, and feel comfortable between their adventures. 🏡☕️

Imagine a Lake This Big Completely Frozen 🧊

Every winter, the Blue Pearl of Mongolia, Lake Khövsgöl, transforms into a completely different world.

Stretching for around 136 km and reaching depths of more than 260 metres, this ancient lake holds around 70% of Mongolia’s freshwater. In winter, its vast surface freezes, creating the incredible setting for the Blue Pearl Ice Festival. 🧊🏔️

And then, for a few days, the frozen lake becomes a place of celebration.

Two Weeks in Mongolia 🇲🇳

It was a real pleasure having Mike and his wife spend two weeks exploring Mongolia with us. 🏡

From travelling through the countryside and discovering Mongolia’s landscapes and culture to staying with us at Fairfield Guesthouse, they experienced a little bit of everything that makes a journey through Mongolia so special.

Where the Journey Feels Like Home 🏡

It was a real pleasure having Margit and Victor from Austria 🇦🇹 stay with us at Fairfield for four days.

One of the nicest things Margit shared was how much she enjoyed the cozy atmosphere at Fairfield, meeting travellers from all over the world, and seeing so many overlanders passing through. 🚐

She also had some very kind words about our restaurant and, of course, our coffee! ☕️💛

The Quiet Beauty of Mongolian Winter ❄️ 🇲🇳

There is something special about experiencing our country in winter.

Imagine yourself standing on the same wide steppe that feels endless and alive in summer, now quiet beneath a blanket of snow. Rivers slow down, lakes freeze, and the mountains take on a completely different beauty beneath the clear winter sky.

Here’s an interesting fact about our home: Ulaanbaatar is the world’s coldest national capital by average annual temperature. January is the coldest month, with average temperatures dropping to around −29°C at night.🧊

But when you visit our country in winter, you discover that winter is about much more than the cold.

You can see how our families make winter part of everyday life. You can visit nomadic families in their winter homes, watch them care for their animals, step inside a warm ger, share a cup of hot tea, and experience the warmth of Mongolian hospitality while the world outside is covered in snow.

And then there are the experiences that make a winter journey truly unforgettable.

🐎 Watch horses move through the snowy steppe
🦌 Meet reindeer herding families in the northern taiga
🦅 See eagle hunters continue an ancient tradition
🐫 Experience Mongolia’s two hu**ed Bactrian camels in their winter landscape

And yes, you will feel the cold. But perhaps that is part of the magic.
It is a side of Mongolia that you simply cannot experience in summer. Truly, Mongolia is worth seeing twice. Once in the warmth of summer. ⛰️ And once in the silence of winter. ❄️

Your Mongolia, Your Way 🇲🇳

We’re happy to share a little collection of memories from Sandra and Lieven, who stayed with us at our Guesthouse and explored Mongolia on bikes they rented from us. 🚴

From having a place to rest and feel at home to setting off on two wheels and discovering the countryside at their own pace, it was wonderful to be a small part of their journey.

They took in the open landscapes, quiet roads, and little moments that make travelling through Mongolia so special. 🌿🚴

Three Weeks Living the Mongolian Way 🇲🇳🐎

Some journeys give you beautiful memories. Others give you a chance to slow down, connect with people, and experience a place in a way you never expected.

Chris and his wife chose to spend around three weeks exploring Central Mongolia on horseback, travelling through open steppe, mountains, valleys, and remote countryside. 🏔️

Along the way, they spent many nights staying with nomadic families, sharing meals, meeting their hosts, learning about their way of life, and experiencing the warmth of Mongolian hospitality. 🏕️

Travelling on horseback gave them the freedom to move slowly through the landscape, follow quiet trails, and experience Mongolia far beyond the usual tourist routes.

We’re incredibly grateful to Chris and his wife for trusting us with their journey and for kindly allowing us to share some of their photos and memories with all of you. 📸
