The ruin of Ongi temple

The ruin of Ongo khiid monastery is located 155 km north from Bayanzag, Saikhan-Ovoo soum of Dundgobi province. The monastery was established in 16th century. At its peak, Ongi monastery had 1000 lamas and 28 temples. Large number of ruins including tall stupas can be seen from the river Ongi. In the 1990s, reconstruction of the monastery started. The first temple was inaugurated in 2004. There is a small museum in a ger in front of it. One of the stupas has just been reconstructed.

At its peak, Ongi monastery was one of the largest monasteries in Gobi desert region. But 1937 political purge also affected the monastery as most of the young men were drafted to the army and elderly monks were shot. There is an ancient “Shaazan” city ruin, which was the craftsmen city of Yuan Dynasty near the ruins of Ongi temple.

Tsagaan Suvarga

The biggest grike land formation Tsagaan Suvarga is located in 155 km south-west from Mandalgobi-central town of Dundgobi province. This is a sheer slope and was an old seabed with sedimentary structure created by millions of years and different colors of the ground represent different times. Approximately 60m high and 400 m length. This landscape looks like stupa or palace., thus called the “Tsagaan Suvarga” or “The white stupas”. It was the land of dinosaurs ancient animals of the prehistoric era.

Baga Gazryn Chuluu

Baga Gazryn Chuluu is elevated 1751m above the sea level. This beautiful and amazing land is located in 90 km from Zorgol khairkhan mountain, in the junction of Adaatsag and Delgertsogt soums of Dundgobi province. These mountains with granite stone massifs are located in Mongolian granite stone zone and wild sheep, goats, ibex, marmot and fox inhabit here. The narrow canyon with asp, birch, white whicker, elm tree and a spring water which comes from the under source is good for health.
Mongol-American joint archeological team studied total 1659 sites as ancient burials, petrolglyps and monasteries in 2001-2008 and excavated 30 site of Bronze and Early Iron Age, 32 sites of Xiong-Nu burial, 3 sites of Turkish period and 13 sites of Mongolian period. These findings have made paleontological, archeological study very impressive.
Aside from rocky land, Baga Gazryn Chuluu is famous for the ruins of Choir monatery. The monastery is located 16km south-west from Baga Gazryn Chuluu site, in the south of Delgertsogt Mountain. The monastery was found by Zava Damdin, philosopher of Ikh Khuree in 1918. The monastery regulation and school was meaningful and expressive at that time and the first name was Dashchoijirlin. The monastery was an educational and cultural center, had several Buddhist schools and study centers. Monastery had 1000 lamas and was divided into 5 sectors. The monastery was blocked and destroyed during 1937 repression period. Since 1990 the next incarnation Luvsandarjaa and some old lamas reconstructed the monastery to continue Buddhist activities.

Khar Bukhyn balgas ruins

The ruin is located at the Khar Bukh river basin, in Dashinchilen soum of Bulgan province. This ruin related to two different periods, and first is Khitan period of X-XI century. The city wall had gates on every side and canals around the wall. The inner square of the wall divided in to two sides, west and east, and some of buildings had own walls. The ruin was constructed of volcanic rocks, green stone and shale. Earthen wares which are discovered from the archeological excavation are similar with Uighur period and these kinds artifacts were widely spread in eastern mares land in IX century. But city architecture is similar with Khitan period and later established stone buildings in the city ruin during the beginning of XVII century. Khar Bukhyn balgas is also called the “Ruins of the Tsogt taij” who was one of the famous generals during, who lived in XVII century. Khar Bukhyn balgas sight was protected in 1998.

Khugnu-Tarna nature reserve area

Khugnu-Tarna nature reserve area covers 469.9 square km of land and is situated in the territory of Gurvanbulag soum, Dashinchilen soum and Rashaant soum of Bulgan province. This area was taken under state protection in 1997. The taiga and steppe plants grow in this area and represent two or three different natural zones. Mongolicus Pojark is a kind of tree, which grows in the sand dunes of Khugnu-Tarna nature reserve.
The main attraction of Khugnu-Tarna nature reserve is a large granite mountain called “Khugnu khan”. This is a large mountain, which local people worship. The peak of Khugnu khan mountain is called Tsetserleg and it is up to 1968.8 m high above the sea level. There are several streams and springs near Khugnu Khan mountain.
Elsen tasarkhai is one part of the Khugnu-Tarna nature reserve area and it is a continuous sand dunes. Elsen tasarkhai is located 80km from the west side of Khugnu Khan mountain. This beautiful sand dunes is divided into two sand belts as Khugnu-Tarna els and Mongol els. Sand dunes, Tarna forest, lake, springs, streams and granite mountain makes Khugnu-Tarna nature reserve one of the best destinations in Mongolia.

Uran togoo Mountain

Urantogoo is located in Khutag-Undur soum of Bulgan province. There are four dormant volcanoes Uran, Tulga, Togoo and Jalavch mountains in 45 km southwest from the Tulbur River site in Khutag Undur soum of Bulgan province. These mountains were intensive during 4th millennium and burnt out 20-25 thousand years ago. Uran Togoo Mountain height is 1686 m above the sea level, upper diameter is 500-600 m, and depth is 50-60 m. Another Tulga, Togoo, and Jalavch mountains are locate in the 12 km west of Uran Togoo Mountain. Crater diameter of Togoo mountain is 400 m, depth is 100 m, 1540 m above sea level and Jalavch mountain locates in the west side of this mountain. In 1965, these mountains are included in the natural sightseeing category of the state preservation.
On the top of the extinct volcano crater there is a lake filled with a small “crater lake” about 20m in diameter. There are green woods in the center of the crater lake. It is a really fascinating mountain. Red deer, ibex, wild boar, Ruddy shelduck and ducks are found from this area.
