WHY VISIT ADDU ??
Addu Hithadhoo, the largest island in Addu Atoll and the second-largest in the Maldives, is a vibrant destination that blends natural beauty with rich history and culture. Located in the southernmost atoll of the country, it offers a unique experience distinct from the more tourist-centric islands.
Unlike the overwater villas of the central Maldives, Hithadhoo showcases a more local and authentic Maldivian lifestyle. The island is known for its lush greenery, scenic mangroves, and extensive wetlands, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers. The Eedhigali Kilhi Wetlands provide a haven for birdwatchers and eco-tourists, featuring exotic bird species, tranquil lakes, and picturesque walking trails.
Hithadhoo is also rich in history, having played a key role during World War II when the British established an airbase on Gan Island, a neighboring isle connected by a causeway. Today, visitors can explore remnants of the island’s past while enjoying modern conveniences, local markets, and warm Maldivian hospitality.
As part of Addu City, Hithadhoo offers a blend of traditional and contemporary Maldivian life, making it a must-visit for travelers seeking cultural immersion, natural beauty, and off-the-beaten-path experiences in the Maldives.
Diving in Addu Atoll: A Hidden Paradise for Divers
Addu Atoll, the southernmost atoll of the Maldives, is a diver’s paradise, offering some of the most pristine and diverse underwater experiences in the country. Unlike the more commercialized diving spots in the central Maldives, Addu boasts untouched reefs, thrilling drift dives, and historic wrecks, making it a must-visit destination for diving enthusiasts.
Top Diving Spots in Addu Atoll
The British Loyalty Wreck
One of the Maldives' most famous wreck dives, the British Loyalty is a 140-meter-long oil tanker sunk during World War II. Resting at a depth of around 33 meters, the wreck is now covered in soft corals and home to schools of fish, turtles, and even the occasional reef shark.
Shark Point :
Known for its strong currents, Shark Point is a hotspot for gray reef sharks, nurse sharks, and eagle rays. Divers can expect thrilling drift dives with a high chance of spotting large pelagic species.
Maa Kandu (Manta Point):
This channel dive is famous for its year-round population of manta rays. During the manta season (typically from November to April), divers can witness these gentle giants gliding through the water while getting cleaned by smaller fish at cleaning stations.
Gan Inside & Outside:
Located near Gan Island, this site offers a mix of coral gardens, overhangs, and caves. Divers can explore an abundance of marine life, including Napoleon wrasse, barracudas, and moray eels.
Kottey Reef:
One of the healthiest reefs in Addu, Kottey Reef is home to vibrant coral formations, turtles, and various reef fish. This site is ideal for underwater photographers due to its stunning marine biodiversity.
Why Dive in Addu?
Healthy Coral Reefs – Unlike other parts of the Maldives, Addu’s reefs were largely unaffected by coral bleaching, offering stunning coral landscapes.
Fewer Crowds – As a lesser-explored diving destination, Addu provides a more peaceful and intimate diving experience.
Year-Round Diving – The atoll offers excellent diving conditions throughout the year, with warm waters and good visibility.
Unique Marine Life – From manta rays and sharks to shipwrecks and rare fish species, Addu's dive sites cater to all levels of divers.
