Exciting Research News from MwAPATA Institute!
We are thrilled to celebrate our Research Analyst, Dinah Salonga, on the publication of her new co-authored study in journal Cogent Food amp; Agriculture (Volume 12, Issue 1, 2026)

In collaboration with Dr. Robertson Khataza and Prof. Kennedy Machira, the research addresses a vital question for smallholders across Sub-Saharan Africa: Can legume production boost nutrition and income? Empirical evidence from Ethiopia and Malawi.

Findings from this paper highlight that ending hunger and poverty isn’t only about growing more food; it’s about choosing the right crop combinations, enhancing market access, and integrating nutrition education into agricultural policy.

Connecting Space Innovation to Agricultural Impact!
Dr. Maggie Munthali, our Research Fellow is at the Africa Space Expo (ASPEX 2026), exploring how satellite data and space technologies can strengthen decision-making, climate resilience, and food systems across Africa.

We are also proud to highlight Dr. Munthali’s role as a Jury Member for the SpatiELLES 2026 Hackathon where she is helping evaluate innovative projects to identify top talent, showcasing and empowering African women in space science and technology in service of the continent's major development goals.
ASPEX serves as a vital continental framework bringing together public and private stakeholders, decision-makers, and researchers to drive public-private partnerships and deploy space technology toward Africa’s major development challenges.

Dr Maggie’s participation is sponsored by African Space Agency (AFSA)

Harnessing space data for agriculture is key to building climate resilience and sustainable commercialisation!

Lemekezani Chilora, Research Analyst at the MwAPATA Institute, presented key findings from our evaluation of the Improving Livelihoods and Resilience (ILIAR) Project at the Dowa District Agriculture Extension Coordination Committee (DAECC) meeting.

Implemented in Dowa and Ntchisi by CADECOM and Permaculture Paradise Institute with funding from NCA/DCA, the ILIAR project focused on advancing agroecology to enhance household welfare and resilience. Our evaluation results demonstrate positive impacts of agroecology on household food and nutrition security as well as income generation.

The DAECC meeting provided a valuable platform to share findings, lessons learned, and the overall impact of the project on local communities. We thank all partners and stakeholders for their continued collaboration and support!

Reflecting, Adapting, and Moving Forward for Greater Impact!

This week, the MwAPATA Institute team joined consortium partners, researchers, government representatives, and agricultural experts in Salima, Malawi, for the Water and Soil Accelerator (WASA) project Pause and Reflect Workshop. We focused on grounded learning and strategic progress:

Grounding in Field Realities: We started in the field, engaging directly with farmers, community leaders, and extension workers to understand local soil and water practices, successes, and real-world challenges.

Evaluating Progress & Lessons: Plenary sessions allowed us to critically review project milestones, identify evidence gaps, and pinpoint bottlenecks that need unblocking.

Adaptive Action Planning: To tackle climate pressures like El Niño and drive responsible scaling, we wrapped up with highly actionable reflections and resolutions, setting clear implementation timelines and refined coordination mechanisms to accelerate sustainable soil and water solutions.

A big thank you to the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and all our partners for a truly impactful, collaborative session!

Lemekezani Chilora, Research Analyst at the MwAPATA Institute, took the stage at the National Agroecology Conference 2026, currently underway at the Crossroads Hotel!

Presenting on "Evidence-Based Agricultural Policy Research and Learning in Malawi," Lemekezani shared key empirical insights from the Improving Livelihoods and Resilience (ILIAR) project. The data clearly show the power of agroecology in action: adopting these practices directly boosts household income, improves diet quality, enhances overall food security, and increases essential protein and vitamin intake for farming families!

To scale these gains across the nation, Lemekezani highlighted that strengthening agricultural extension services is critical. However, since some households have yet to fully adopt these practices, future interventions must remain inclusive to ensure no farmer is left behind.

This evidence strongly reinforces what the Guest of Honour, MacPherson Nthala (Deputy Director for the Land Resources Conservation Department, Ministry of Agriculture), underscored during the event: agroecology isn't just a set of farming techniques; it is a holistic, science-backed, and community-centred paradigm shift essential for transforming Malawi’s food systems.

The ILIAR project is sponsored by NCA-DCA and implemented in partnership with CADECOM and the Permaculture Paradise Institute.

MwAPATA Institute continues to bridge the gap between science, community needs, and national policy through actionable research.
