When you’re lucky enough to find yourself wandering through the beautiful rolling hills of the Nyika Plateau, you will hear delicate whistles sing through the wind. Not your imagination playing tricks on you (though who could blame you, Nyika has a magic that is utterly enchanting), but a call from the lovely reedbuck that dwell on the plateau.

‘Changing the Lens on Conservation’.

Here at CAWS, we’ve always firmly believed that running a tourism operation in a national park in Africa would struggle if it did not in one way or another give back to the local communities. It’s Malawian heritage and land, after all!

But human wildlife conflict, poverty and hunger are realities that can make nature protection and preservation complicated. People and nature go hand in hand - healthy communities means healthy ecosystems.

So how do we help, and how can you get involved?

run an incredible operation and have been present in Malawi since 2003. We’ve been active in supporting the presence of CITW-Malawi in areas close to CAWS camps and lodges.

CITW seeks to facilitate sustainable conservation through leadership development and education of rural children in Africa. This is achieved by placing emphasis on self esteem and giving children the tools to achieve their dreams, shaping perspectives and leaders of tomorrow.

Human-wildlife conflict is very real across Malawi, and often the experience of elephants (njovu) is conflictual and traumatising. By ‘Changing the Lens in Conservation’ Symon Chibaka], CITW project leader in Malawi aims to teach children different lenses in which to view wildlife…through wildlife photography and storytelling.

The project is in its early staged but four CITW schools are now equipped with cameras and tripods so teachers and children can tell their own stories of nature.

Please get in touch with Symon Chibaka] if you’d like to support this beautiful project! Any donation, particularly around the Christmas period; is highly appreciated.

How does one describe the thrill of hearing a lion roar? Of having those big yellow eyes lock on to yours, of seeing his young greet him with a nuzzle. The power of a lioness heaving her kill in the heat to her cubs. Such gentleness and such brute force.

That is the wild.

Walking safaris truly are a wonderful way to feel the bush. As one of our guests recently told us after his morning out with his guide and ranger, “each activity here has a different feel. The sunset cruise is beautiful and peaceful. The drive allows us to cover more ground and increase chances of seeing more landscape and animals. But the walk… the walk gives us the adrenaline of being at ground level, amongst nature. We feel things that we don’t often feel and it’s incredible’.

Couldn’t agree more!

See you on your next walk with us, either at Mvuu or Chelinda 😉🐾

As we await the rains, and the heat builds up, few things are more enjoyable than taking a dip in the pool in between safaris - maybe with a drink of something cold. We love wandering around the Mvuu pathways taking you to the pool, yoga deck or right up to the Shire River. Admire hippos and elephants grazing our laguna safely too, if you’re lucky!

Repost from our wonderful friends from who celebrate 20 years of positive action !

They say:

‘CITW Malawi kicked off in 2003 with a five night/six day camp held at Mvuu Camp in Liwonde National Park for 10 children from th SOS village in Lilongwe.

It was planned and conducted by camp mentors who were all Wilderness Safaris Malawi employees and by Ellen Wolford (a young English woman based in Malawi at the time), who was hired as caretaker Programme coordinator’.

In fact; we at Mvuu remember this camp like it was yesterday. Danger, one of our guides who is actively involved in child care; education and empowerment, was one of the guides mentoring the trip, alongside Matthews, who used to work for us before starting his own schooling project in Ulongwe. Since then, the project has grown, and every year we close Mvuu Camp to host CITW learners for 1-2 weeks.

You may have read of or met Chifundo, another of our superb guides. He was part of the CITW camper group in 2009 as a young boy. It ignited a passion for wildlife and conservation as well as community engagement that truly shows in his guiding. Chifundo is now very closely involved with who runs CITW-Malawi and we could not be prouder of the the success stories emerging from this project.

Check the link in bio to read Symon’s story of CITW-Malawi.

Just another sunset in Liwonde 😍

The last few days have been a little stressful for the industry, as you probably all know, but evenings like these remind us of the incredible and beautiful world we live in. The sun will keep rising and setting and we will keep welcoming our beloved guests to the best of our ability; and making sure they can forget the world for a minute and be fully immersed in the stunning nature all around us, be it in Nyika or Liwonde.

The bush is good for the soul. Our guides will teach you incredible things, show you invisible stories and make you laugh, whilst our chefs will satisfy your taste-buds. And the rest of the team will make you feel at home. We really can’t wait to see you all!
