James Suckling certainly knows how to host a wine tasting event. Over 850 wines were showcased over the course of two days. I appreciated the convenient layout, with all the wines displayed on one floor in a single room, with different wines available for tasting each day. By spitting and carefully managing our wine samples, we were able to taste over 330 wines. I must admit, we are not wine connoisseurs superman/women, so we did not attempt to try more.

Miami proved to be an excellent venue for the event. The vibrant atmosphere of South Beach was a perfect complement to the wine tasting. We began the event with a gastronomic lunch at the Michelin-starred Le Jardinier Miami. On Friday, we visited the Versace Mansion, also known as The Villa Casa Casuarina, where we were treated to a romantic lunch in the cupola courtyard area adjacent to the mosaic pool at Gianni's Restaurant. During our lunch, a couple nearby got engaged, which added a touch of romance to the occasion.

James needs to consider adding Mexican wines to the lineup, hint,hint, Provino Baja California.

Back in 2009 we went to Bordeaux and got the wine 🍷 bug 🐞! We thought then with 72 bordeaux wines we had hit the jackbox! Well last night blew that away with amazing 📚 library wines from Bordeaux. The 52 still had fruit, yes! The 1970 Latour was showing beautifully! The side-by-side of 89 Margaux, Latour, and Lafite… can you say magical. The night kicked off with imperials of d’Yquem 2023 not yet released to the public. We tasted so many many wines, it was just overwhelming and a night we will never forget!

Once in a lifetime 24 year vertical tasting of Château Haut-Brion. First, they were all wonderful, but as our noses and palates settled in, we divided the wines into buckets:
sunny (2015,2009,2003,1999),
tough (2014,2011,2004,1994), challenging (2013,2002,1997,1992), charming (2012, 2007, 2001, 1993), monumental (2010,2005,2000,1995), and outsiders (2008,2006,1998,1996).

From there we narrowed it again to key years…

Perfection - 1995
Almost Perfect - 2000 (also our 25th Anniversary)
Too Young - 2005, 2010
Amazing - 1993, 2001,
Surprise - 2008, 2004, 1999, 1996

In commemoration of the Year of the Horse 🐴 and Chinese New Year, we honor the memory of Ladybug 🐞, our cherished Paint Mare, who would have encouraged us to acknowledge our neighbor Nino, a delightful 10-year-old brown gelding horse known for his cheerful whinnies in response to greetings and his fondness for carrots, apples, and peppermints. Moreover, his three neighboring horses offer a unique benefit by clearing the area between the vines during winter, creating a serene atmosphere to enjoy while having coffee on the terrace in the mornings.

Do you engage in equestrian activities? There are several options available in the Valle, including riding winery to winery, taking a dressage lesson on an Andalusian from Spain, or experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime ride on an Azteca horse.

We have acquired and mounted a second piece of artwork from Tara Thompson Art, which has been a long-awaited addition. Upon initial inspection, I was struck by the resemblance to the Baja Mexican folktale popularized by John Steinbeck's The Pearl, a narrative that explores the destructive nature of greed, the corrupting influence of wealth, social injustice, racism, and the loss of innocence. Subsequently, I noted the intriguing similarities between Baja and Louisiana, both distinguished by their oyster industries and shared challenges. This artwork serves as a poignant connection between the two locations. Notably, Tara Thompson Art incorporated an additional layer of meaning into this painting, titled the “Hidden Jewel”. A more detailed examination reveals an abstract map of the “Crescent City” intricately painted within the shell, mirroring the distinctive crescent shape formed by the Mississippi River, an emblematic symbol of New Orleans. This thoughtful detail brings a smile to my face, as both Baja and New Orleans possess qualities of hidden jewels. Tara Thompson Art

We could not have acheived this without our amazing staff. Edith our property manager who is local and speaks English, Spanish, and French is available for guests during their entire stay. Saira who we call Mrs. Clean and does an amazing job to clean our home especially on same day turnovers which is every weekend with less than 4 hours to clean over 4,000 square feet! Lastly, Emmanuel whose love of plants shows with his magic touch in our desert garden.

Our talented friend Tara Thompson created an exquisite acrylic original titled "Guiding Light". From the moment we encountered it in her collection, we instinctively knew it would be a perfect addition to our home, as it resonated deeply with us. Notably, our desert courtyard is frequently visited by hummingbirds, and as we were unwrapping the painting, a hummingbird appeared outside the window, as if to claim the spot. This serendipitous moment led us to place the artwork on that particular wall. Furthermore, we were captivated by the symbolism and meaning behind Tara's work, which she eloquently described as "A tiny hummingbird in flight carries glowing lanterns, a symbol of hope and gentle guidance through the dark. Even the smallest guide can brighten the path ahead." We believe that in times of adversity, it is often the smallest symbols that can provide solace and inspiration. The artwork's significance and power are undeniable. You are welcome to visit our home in the Valle to experience this stunning piece, which is prominently displayed to guide you on your journey.
