There is a corner of Isla Mujeres where the land runs out and the Caribbean opens up in every direction. 🌊

Punta Sur sits at the island's southernmost tip, and for the ancient Maya it was far more than a viewpoint. This was a sacred site dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, of love, and of creation - the first place in Mexico where the sun rises each morning. Pilgrims crossed open water to reach it, and the clifftop still carries that feeling of arrival.

Today a series of sculptures stands along those same cliffs, facing east toward the horizon. Standing among them at first light, with the sea below and the wind coming straight off the Caribbean, it's easy to understand why this place has been drawing people for centuries. 🌅

“How’s the sargassum?”

Here’s Playa Norte yesterday (Sunday, August 2nd). 🩵☀️

Clear turquoise water, soft white sand, and another beautiful day in paradise. 🌴

As you can see, there were only a few small pieces of sargassum on the shoreline, while the water remained clear and inviting for swimming and enjoying the beach.

One of the reasons Playa Norte continues to stand out is the incredible work of the local beach crews, who are out every morning helping keep the shoreline clean and enjoyable. Their dedication is a big part of why Isla Mujeres remains one of the best beach destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, even during sargassum season.
