The facade appears to have been lifted directly from some 19th C Venetian architectural style book by the builder, an 1880s architect of note, as he built the lighthouse in the Port of Progreso, the state capitol building of Yucatan, his own nearby mansion filled with arabic arches and porticos and a half city block of townhouses for his own children. Abandoned not long after the chicle boom ended, until 1983 when it became one of Merida's first serious spaces readapted and designed and reused as a small, classic city-center lodging -- with bars, pool, and terraces. Casa Mexilio was one of the firsts, and its popularity initiated what today is an overly saturated city-centre market. It helped spur the gentrification which is the Merida of today. Notable politicos, artists, chicleros, hacendados lived here. The major chronicler of the Caste War died here. President Lázaro Cardenas visited here. Two generations of owners of the legendary Xcanchakan Hacienda lived here. This was their home and office in Merida, away from the Big House in the country. La Taberna utilizes the ample spaces within the period rooms, tropical gardens and rooftop terraces to transport guests back in time. It's a joy -- and a trip -- Ca, c'était avant...!

The home's original BALCONIES still supply the ROMANCE and FANTASY. The balcony and the open window remain common motifs in literature and art, because it is there where all the amorous entreaties occurred: where grand gestures were made and where people waited silently for a spared glance, where serenades were sung and hands asked for in marriage, where everything could change.
:::::::::::::::

They took me to THE PRADO MUSEUM when I was twenty-six. Goya was the star and the visit was swift and the dialect was not understandable. But, I saw Goya !
Twenty years later I returned to Goya, but by an elliptical route, through the music of Granados. I practiced the tunes, but did not understand, foolishly thinking that a “mago” was a magician.
Twenty years later I finally mastered TWO of his ‘Goyescas’. I performed THEM, but still didn’t understand.

It’s taken me sixty years to become acquainted with the man with the large moustache. And it is a ‘lament’ as one of his pieces infers. He died, drownded while attempting to save his wife who was floundering in the waters of the English Channel, after their ship was hit by a German submarine.

FIRST ATTEMPT at building with cement - my Dad was a carpenter and most of the houses in my village were made of wood. This polished cement floor from 1982 is still beautiful. The room on top of a very high house here in the Barrio of Santiago, was a FOLLY. It was created by an albañil from Caucel, nicknamed "el torero" and the penthouse folly was copied and copied, at a time when Meridanos pulled chairs onto the sidewalk, instead of using their rooftops.

OK - I'm ready to leave the personal page and do some business. "Events" are on my plate, now. We've had one piano recital/lecture in March. The performance butterflies are less active. The new event is Sat. 23rd of April. And it's my take on TANGO for listening, not dancing. Shooo butterflies !

A long time ago, when Yucatan still had a rail road and the government hadn’t pulled up the rails and cross ties, and torn down the train stations - I took the train to the Hacienda Le Pan. I was really going to Hda. Xcanchakan, Jorge’s birthplace, but decided to get off at the nearby stop where the train passed through the ruins of the faded Le Pan. And struggling to find the main road, I stumbled onto a burning rubbish pile and rescued this little orchid.
:::::::::::::::
Realmente iba a Hda.

A Wall Stencil copied by MIGUEL DUARTE in the 80s from Tercera Orden. A first friend who succumbed during our first pandemic to a virus that still haunts us tonight, 42 years later. We enjoy his ART and speak his NAME.

GLOOMY
The market was slow - I was early - our gloomy Monday is beautiful - with thoughts of Jane Austen or youthful adventures in Holland. The boys from Gouda helped me find my train !
