El Gran Desierto de Altar is located 35 miles north of Puerto Penasco. The most distinguishable signs of the desert include the Pinacate Volcano (visible throughout Puerto Penasco and Cholla) and sand dunes throughout the lower reaches of the volcanic fields.
There are two different options to visiting Pinacate. First, tour this UNESCO World Heritage Site by making a reservation with one of these operators: https://bit.ly/2MIYiFg and get up close to the volcanic craters and lava flows. There is a per person charge depending on the size of the group. Second, tour the self-paced Shuck Toak Museum built over a lava field: https://bit.ly/3lbAlmr
Although a desert, there are many forms of life which have adapted to this climate. There are over 40 species of mammals, 200 of birds, 40 of reptiles, as well as amphibians and two species of native freshwater fish. There are also some endemic species such as the Sonoran pronghorn, the bighorn sheep, the Gila monster and the desert turtle.
The area has been occupied by native people on and off for the past 20,000 years. In times of drought, the area would not be able to support life so natives would seek shelter elsewhere. When the climate returned to a wetter environment the tribes would return.

CEDO stands for Center for the study of Deserts and Oceans. CEDO works with local partners and industries to create sustainable fishing for an environmentally friendly future. CEDO is located Southeast of central Puerto Penasco in the area of Los Conchas.
Stop by to learn about the Northern Gulf of California. There is a small Exhibition Hall which highlights the work CEDO has completed and challenges they have faced.
After the Exhibition Hall, head outside and grab a picture with the skeleton of a fin whale. This specimen washed up deceased in 1984. A group of scientists from CEDO collected, cleaned, and washed the bones which were then set up for display.

Día de los Mu***os is a Mexican holiday celebrated from October 31st to November 2nd. This fiesta started in central and southern Mexico, but is now a national holiday and recognized throughout the country.
During the 3 day event, family members celebrate and pray for their deceased relatives to help them along their spiritual journey. On the 31st, the spirits of children are invited to come back. On the 1st, adult spirits receive the invitation to return. On the 2nd, living family members visit cemeteries to decorate and celebrate their relatives who have passed on.
Continuing the celebratory vibe, vibrant colors and
flowers are used throughout this holiday. On the final day of the holiday, marigold flowers and favorite foods of the deceased are placed as an ofrenda (offering) at gravestones.

Make a pit stop at The Why Not Travel Store on your way to Rocky Point. Top off your gas, buy Mexican car insurance, or stop in for a quick snack. They offer an array of sweet treats and many essentials that might’ve been left at home.
The Why Not Travel Store’s page contains essential information if driving. They post live and up-to-date information on border lines and wait times. You’ll also find information on road conditions for state routes 85 (Phoenix) and 86 (Tucson). The Why Not Travel Store also has a Pet of the Mouth contest. See their page for more details: http://rb.gy/vtsc1q
Why does Why, Arizona have such a unique name? During the early history of Why, state routes 85 and 86 formed a literal Y intersection. As it grew, and required a post office, the town wanted to name itself Y, Arizona. However, Arizona state law requires a 3 letter minimum for city names, so they decided to go with Why.
Stop in. Why? Why not.
