Hurricane season in Puerto Vallarta 🌴
This week there has been a lot of concern about Hurricane Polo, and understandably so. When you live on the Pacific coast, you learn to pay attention to these storms and never take them lightly.
Over the years, Puerto Vallarta has seen hurricanes come close and some have caused damage. We remember Kenna, Nora and Lidia, and of course Patricia, when everyone prepared for what could have been a direct hit.
We have been very fortunate many times.
People often say that Banderas Bay and the Sierra Madre protect Puerto Vallarta. I wouldn’t say we are protected from hurricanes, but our location has certainly been fortunate compared with other places along Mexico’s Pacific coast.
And while we have all been watching Polo this week, this is what it has actually looked like here in Vallarta.
Beautiful skies, calm moments on the Bay, amazing clouds and everything incredibly green.

People sometimes ask us if September is a good time to come to Puerto Vallarta because it's rainy season.
Yes, it rains. But usually that doesn't mean it's raining all day.
We can have a beautiful morning, plenty of sunshine and then watch the clouds come in later in the afternoon.

Big rain clouds, the sun coming through underneath them, the Bay in the background and the bougainvillea looking better than ever.
That's one of the nice things about September. The rain makes everything green, there are fewer people in town, and you get evenings like this.

It's September 16 in Mexico. So what's for lunch? 🇲🇽
After El Grito last night and the Independence Day parade this morning, there's another very important part of the celebration:
Food.
This is the kind of day when families gather around the table for pozole, tostadas, enchiladas and all kinds of Mexican antojitos.
And if you're in Jalisco, there's a good chance that pozole is red — traditionally prepared here with dried chiles such as ancho and guajillo.
That's one of the things we love about Mexican traditions. History is important, but so much of the culture is passed along at the table.

Tonight is a big night in Mexico. 🇲🇽
If you’re visiting and wondering why everyone is celebrating tonight when Mexican Independence Day is actually tomorrow, here’s the story.
In the early hours of September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bell in Dolores and called people together. That moment started the movement that would eventually lead to Mexican Independence.
And more than 200 years later, Mexico still remembers it.
Tonight there will be celebrations all over the country. People will gather in plazas and homes. There will be music, flags, bells, food, fireworks and a lot of ¡Viva México!
Puerto Vallarta will be celebrating too.

Did you know September 14 is Día Nacional del Charro in Mexico? 🇲🇽
And there’s a reason we’re sharing this particular photo today.
This isn’t a charreada. It’s a pair of traditional dancers — he is wearing a charro suit and she is dressed in the beautiful traditional style of Jalisco.
But that’s actually part of the story.
Charrería began with the skills of Mexican horsemen working with livestock. Those skills were passed down through generations and eventually became the organized tradition and sport we know today.
Over time, the charro became something even bigger: one of the images most closely associated with Mexico.
Here in Jalisco, we see that heritage in so many places — in charrería, celebrations, traditional dress, music and dance.
And there’s something else you may not know: charrería was inscribed by UNESCO in 2016 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
So today, just before Mexico’s Independence celebrations, we celebrate another tradition that is very close to Jalisco.

You know September has arrived in Mexico before you even look at the calendar.
You start seeing more color everywhere. Flags begin to appear, papel picado goes up, restaurants start thinking about traditional dishes, and little by little you can feel that Mexico is getting ready to celebrate.
September is el mes patrio — the month when Mexico celebrates the beginning of its fight for Independence.
The biggest celebrations are still a few days away. On the night of September 15, people gather in plazas and homes for El Grito, and September 16 marks the anniversary of the beginning of Mexico's Independence movement in 1810.
But part of the fun is everything that happens before.
