There is something magical about Puerto Vallarta during the rainy season.
Our city is green all year long, but once the summer rains arrive, everything seems to come alive in a whole new way.
The tropical jungle becomes even more vibrant, the giant parota trees fill with fresh new leaves, bugambilias burst into color, and before long, the tabachines will once again paint the hillsides with brilliant shades of red and orange.
It's easy to think of Puerto Vallarta as a beach destination, but it's so much more than that.
We are incredibly fortunate to live where the Sierra Madre Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, creating one of the richest tropical landscapes in Mexico!
One of my favorite things about this season at Villa Savana is watching our guests slow down and notice the little things—the sound of the birds after a summer shower, the scent of the earth, the endless shades of green surrounding every terrace, and the feeling that nature is putting on its best show.
The rainy season doesn't mean it rains all day.
Most days still bring plenty of sunshine, with refreshing afternoon showers that keep everything lush and beautiful.
For me, this is one of the most beautiful times of year to experience Puerto Vallarta.

I'd like you to meet someone very special.
Her name is Mabel.
If you've stayed at Villa Savana before, there's a good chance you've already met her.
If you haven't... you're in for a treat!
Mabel isn't an elevator.
She's a vintage funicular.
She quietly carries our guests between the Villa's five levels, gliding up and down the hillside just as she has for many years.
I have to admit, she's become a little bit of a celebrity around here!
People photograph her.
Children are fascinated by her.
And more often than not, guests leave saying, "I've never ridden in a funicular before."
One of my favorite things about Mabel is the view.
As she climbs, you catch little glimpses of the gardens, the Villa, and Puerto Vallarta that you simply don't see any other way.
It's only a short ride.....but somehow everyone slows down for a moment.
Now, because Mabel is a proper vintage lady, she does have a few house rules.
She doesn't enjoy heavy rain very much.
And she'd be ever so grateful if little fingers didn't press every button at once.
She's perfectly happy doing her job... she just appreciates good manners.
Don't we all? 😊
The wonderful thing is that she's cared for beautifully.
Our team gives her regular maintenance and plenty of attention, so she's ready to welcome each new family that arrives at Villa Savana.

One of my absolute favorite things about staying at Villa Savana is how connected we are to the real heart of Puerto Vallarta.
Whenever guests ask me for a little morning idea, I always tell them to just put on some comfortable shoes and take the walk down the hill. In just about 10 minutes, you’re right at the Cuale River.
I’ve been in love with this town for so long, and the Cuale is truly its soul. It starts way up high in the Sierra Madre mountains—where the old silver mines used to be back in the 1800s—and winds all the way down through the jungle until it hits Banderas Bay.
Right where it reaches town, it splits into two and forms Isla Cuale, this lush, green island right in the middle of everything. It separates Downtown from the Romantic Zone, and walking under those big, shady trees with the breeze coming off the river is pure magic.
You’ll see local artists, little craft stalls, and if you look up, maybe even a few iguanas hanging out in the canopy!
There’s an old local legend here that says: "If you drink the water of the Cuale River, you’ll always return to Puerto Vallarta."
Well, I don't know about drinking the river water, but I can tell you from experience—once this place gets into your heart, you really do keep coming back.

If you’ve ever sat on our terrace at Villa Savana, cocktail in hand, watching the sun dip below the horizon, you know exactly what I mean when I say the sunsets here are life-changing.
But it’s those brilliant bursts of fuchsia and fiery orange framing the view that completely steal the show.
That’s our bougainvillea.
Around here, it practically defines the magic of the Mexican Pacific. But did you know this vibrant beauty isn't actually native to Mexico?
Its journey here is a wild mix of high-seas adventure, imperial romance, and ancient myth.
It all started back in 1766 on a French naval ship. In those days, women were strictly forbidden on Navy vessels. But Jeanne Baret, a brilliant young botany expert, wasn't about to let rules get in the way of adventure.
She disguised herself as a man, slipped onto the ship as a cabin assistant, and sailed clean across the world. When they docked in Brazil, it was Jeanne who braved the jungle and discovered the very first bougainvillea.
Decades later, Emperor Maximilian and Empress Carlota fell head over heels for the plant and brought it to Mexico for their royal estate gardens.
But if you ask me, the plant didn't truly find its soul until it met the warm, sun-kissed humidity of our coast. The bay air and endless Vallarta sunshine made it explode with a passion and color you just don't see anywhere else in the world.
There’s actually a beautiful old legend that says bougainvilleas are the ultimate messengers for "twin flames"—souls split in two, searching for each other. The story goes that when one soul longs for the other, the wind drops a vibrant pink petal right at their beloved's feet.
Around the villa, we like to say our bougainvilleas grow so wild and beautiful facing the ocean because they’re catching the sighs of lovers carried across the water by the sea breeze.
