On Mexico’s Pacific coast lies the beautiful and historic city of Puerto Vallarta. What was once a haven for pirates and smuggling is now one of the premiere resort destinations on the Mexican pacific coast. No matter if you are staying at an all-inclusive resort or just stopping for the day with a cruise ship, there is plenty for you to explore in the historic downtown area.

The Malecon

The number one activity/area in Puerto Vallarta is just a short drive from any resort or hotel in town. The Malecon is a 12 block-long walk right along the water in downtown Puerto Vallarta. Peppered with street performers, art statues, and sand sculptures, The Malecon is a pedestrians-only place to see and be seen. Lined with restaurants, bars, shops, and more, during the day you can meet tour guides, and tequila peddlers, and at night the fun turns up a notch with clubs and bars abuzz with activity. On Sunday evenings, take in the locals who come out in force for the Paseo, a gathering of the family for socialization and fun. There is also entertainment every night of the week at the amphitheater here.

Don’t Miss: The Papantla Bird-men. These acrobats sing a song, say a prayer, and launch themselves off a platform 75 feet in the air. Gracefully spinning around, slowly making their way to the ground, all the while playing their instruments for the gods. All that for the price of a tip in the passed hat. Awesome.

Puerto Vallarta was once again named a 'Top City To Visit in Mexico, Central and South America' on the Travel + Leisure's 2014 'World's Best' readers' poll - moving up to #4 from #5 in 2013.
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Each year, Travel + Leisure assigns their World's Best Awards to what they call "the definitive list of top cruise lines, hotels, airlines, car rental agencies, islands and cities, according to the votes of readers." One of the special features of these awards is that they are voted on by tourists from around the world.

The winners of Travel + Leisure 2014 World's Best Awards readers' survey were announced on July 24th in New York - and Puerto Vallarta has moved up to #4 on the magazine's "Top City in Mexico, Central and South America" list.

Travel + Leisure readers first added Puerto Vallarta to this exclusive list in 2011 as one of their top travel experiences to be had around the globe. Since then, the destination has moved from number 8 on the list to #7 in 2012 and #5 in 2013. This year's position, at number 4, puts Puerto Vallarta right behind international favorites like Buenos Aires, Cuzco and Mexico City, which took the #1 spot on this year's list.

"We are very proud and honored to be recognized by the readers of Travel + Leisure in this category," said the city's newly appointed Tourism Director, Rolando Miravete. "Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico's leading destinations because our travel experience is one of the most rewarding to people of all ages and backgrounds. Our guests are people who like to experience nature, culture, gastronomy, life and they find it on a daily basis in Puerto Vallarta," he added.

As one of the most acclaimed destinations in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta continually receives accolades from media and visitors alike. This past January, U.S. News & World Report travel editors named Puerto Vallarta one of "The Best Places to Visit in Mexico" and its beaches were named the third best in Mexico. In addition, Puerto Vallarta came in at #4 in their "Best Spring Break Destinations in the World" category.

Puerto Vallarta earned all of these recognitions by consistently offering exceptional tourism services. As one of Mexico's most attractive destinations, the Banderas Bay region's steady growth has been accompanied by an extensive expansion of its tourism infrastructure, and an increasing number of cultural activities to better serve both the growing number of travelers who visit Puerto Vallarta every year, and the city's ever-growing population.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - A group of capitalist businessmen are building a renowned shopping center in Puerto Vallarta. Called 'La Isla,' the new mall represents a new and attractive concept that already operates in other major Mexican tourist destinations, such as Cancun and Acapulco.

The business group will build La Isla Puerto Vallarta with typical Mexican characteristics, respecting as much as possible the image that this destination has in Mexico and abroad.

The commercial project will be located on the north side of the Grand Venetian touristic real estate development, overlooking the Pitillal River.

Contemplated work would involve a comprehensive series of jobs, which includes the remodeling and renovation of Peninsula Plaza, enclosing 'The Island' property, and building a connecting bridge over the Pitillal River.

Thus the project of La Isla Puerto Vallarta would combine two areas: the Peninsula shopping plaza, which the capital business group has already acquired for an undisclosed amount, and the property on which the 'Very Mexican' mall will be built.

To realize this project, the Group also acquired the land located on the north side of the Grand Venetian development, which represents a corridor-type entrance that will go from Avenida Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue to the foot of Holi Beach.

Once operational, the La Isla Mall will boast stores and brands of national and international prestige, upscale restaurants and boutiques, and the added "plus" of being connected to Peninsula Plaza by a panoramic bridge.

The group of investors that will make this ambitious project a reality has extensive experience in luxury real estate and commercial center developments in the country.

There is talk of a large investment and the possibility that next year they will be ready to build the plaza, which they anticipate will be operational by the end of 2015.

With commercial investments like this continuing to stream into Puerto Vallarta comes the imminent recovery of the tourism industry in Puerto Vallarta, and the country in general.

Thanks to Maria O'Connor.
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - I have been a full-time resident of Puerto Vallarta for nearly twenty-five years, almost half my life! Although I work full time, I have tried to take advantage of vacation time and long weekends to try and explore other parts of this beautiful country that I call home. Puerto Vallarta is ideally located as a jumping-off point to discover other parts of Mexico. We have all major luxury bus lines at our disposal and finally, some new options for domestic flights that will not break the bank.

Mexico City is magical - one of the largest cities in the world, it is a meeting place of old and new cultures, a hub of activity, a culinary mecca and a stunning canvas upon which Mexico's vibrant history is painted. It is extremely accessible, very safe and you will never run out of things to do. There are activities for every budget and enjoyment for every age.

I try and visit at least twice or three times a year. I have stayed in all parts of the city and my favorite areas or colonias are the Condesa and the Centro Historico. I have stayed in high-end hotels and budget traveler-style hotels and enjoyed both. I prefer something historic and interesting to chain hotels, but for those that prefer the comfort of a known quantity, every major chain is represented. Hotels that I like are the Downtown and the Hotel Isabel in the Centro Historico, and the Condesa D.F. and the Red Tree House in the Condesa. Even though it is a chain, the Four Seasons is never a bad idea and they often have special rates. Also, their bar for happy hour is fabulous.

I have also had great luck monitoring the different airlines for special fares and promotions. I have flown on Vivaaerobus a few times, once paying only $350 pesos round trip! I am going this October with Volaris and my ticket cost me $499 pesos each way. There are restrictions and often you will need to purchase the tickets way in advance, (I bought the October ticket last December), but it can make a big difference in the price.

Although you could spend years in the city and not see all that there is to see, I have made up a sample 4-day itinerary for first-time visitors, which highlights some of the must-see attractions. I have organized them geographically so that you are not all over the place fighting traffic. You can do the days in any order and obviously I have included particular favorites that could be replaced by others.

Day 1 - Downtown

Palacio Nacional, Bellas Artes, Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico, Palace of the Inquisition (really cool torture museum!), House of Agustin Iturbide, La Real Aduana (SEP), Musel del Estanquillo (Carlos Monsivais collections), Torre Latinoamerica, Templo Mayor

Take a break at the old Sanborns or at Salon Corona for beer and tacos. For a nicer breakfast or lunch, try Azul Historico in the Downtown.

Day 2 - Pyramids

Pyramids are a lot of work so you probably want to limit yourself to just this. If you are so inclined, you can stop at the Guadalupe Temple on the way there. A cool way to see them might be to do the hot-air balloon sunrise champagne tour - you fly over the pyramids and then can explore them before the general public arrives for the tours.

Day 3 - Chapultepec

Anthropology Museum, Chapultepec Castle, Chapultepec Park, Natural History Museum, Jumex Museum and the Outside of the Soumaya Museum

You can have a nice lunch in the park or in Polanco. I did not care for the Soumaya Museum but the outside of it is really cool and is worth walking by.

Day 4 - South Part of the City

Dolores Olmedo Museum, Museo Anahuacalli (Diego River's house when he died), Museo Frida Kahlo, Museo del Carmen, Casa Trotsky

The areas of San Angel and Coyoacan are pretty and great to walk around - if you go to San Angel on a Saturday there is a big art market in the park. Options for lunch or dinner Cluny and Turtux in San Angel.

I know I have left out a plethora of wonderful places and things to see but that is part of the wonder of this city, you will never run out of new adventures! Provecho!

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico - Last week, Mayor Ramón Guerrero Martínez raised the blue flag on Playa de Palmares, which distinguishes this public beach for its high standards of cleanliness, safety, accessibility, amenities and environmental management, as was determined by the Foundation for Environmental Education's (FEE) international jury of environmentalists.

Located on Puerto Vallarta's Southern shores, Palmares is the first beach in the state that holds this valuable certification, and it has become a role model in Jalisco.

"Today this beach has changed the face of Puerto Vallarta, it has changed our city's history. It is the first Blue Flag beach in the state of Jalisco and this forces us to keep working hard and to redouble our efforts," said the mayor.

He stressed that this achievement is just one of the goals that his government defined to make Puerto Vallarta the most sustainable city in the country with the largest number of certified beaches with public access.

For this purpose, detailed Ramón Guerrero, 25 executive projects for improving access to local beaches were recently presented to the Federal Government's Undersecretary of Tourism, Carlos Joaquin, who expressed his support for the city, recognizing that we are meeting the goal of being a clean and safe destination for both inhabitants and visitors.

"We're going for $50 million pesos to make Puerto Vallarta the city with not only the most accessible beaches, but also the city with the safest beaches," he said.

He added that in addition to the rescue of these public spaces, the city is working on getting certification for a larger number of beaches, two of them under the Blue Flag designation, as in the case of the Camarones and Holi beaches, which are currently being readied for the award.

Of the work done on Palmares Beach, the mayor said it was an achievement to be proud of, "it went from being a forgotten place, a beach that served as a municipal landfill, a dump; to a rescued space, made accessible by ramps and stairs, rest rooms, dressing rooms, drinking fountains, and all of the safety equipment... so today the raising of the Blue Flag is the best way to welcome the 2014 Summer holiday period," he said.

He also acknowledged the efforts of all the different city government departments, whose daily work has made a dream a reality. "Today local families can enjoy a day at this beach, and it is also a bonus for the tourists who visit our city; but now, it is in the hands of our citizens to ensure that Vallarta remains a first class vacation destination."

"This is how our government works, by changing history responsibly; by working together with society, with the citizens who are committed to the destination, with those who are committed to the tourism sector," the Mayor clarified.

The ceremony was attended by PROFEPA's Deputy Inspector of Natural Resources for Jalisco, Gustavo Bonilla Barragán; Ignacio Enrique García Encarnación, representing the Federal Maritime Zone Fund committee (ZOFEMAT); the President of the Puerto Vallarta Hotel Association, Ignacio Cadena Beraud; and Regional Tourism Director, Ludwig Estrada Virgen, among others.
