The wave is the first thing you see and the last thing you hear. El Faro breaks off the rocks at the bottom of the garden, close enough that you can judge the morning from the bed in the master suite and, if it’s working, be in the water before the children are up.
There are boards on a rack by the door for the family, from longboards to something short enough to be a bad idea.
The house is one straight line of water pointed at the Pacific: a long pool running between two tall concrete walls from the entrance to a wide sand garden with agaves, a few boulders and a fire pit, which is where the kids end up every evening whether or not anyone planned it.
The master sits at the far end with its own pool and a round hot tub sunk into the deck, so the surf check can be done from warm water. The other suites look over the garden toward the sea; one has bunks, and there is a room upstairs for whoever came along to help.
A thatched palapa by the main pool does lunch, a woven chair hangs from a chain in the palms for the person who wants to be left alone with a book, and a yellow Kombi sits on the property for reasons nobody has fully explained.
Jorge handles the cart, the boats and the reservations, Itzel cooks, and the house runs itself around you. Pacífico Beach Club and the Nicklaus courses are a few minutes inside the gates. Come see it — we’ll drive the cart.
