Did you know green sea turtles were not named for their shells, but for the green color of their fat? Historically, these remarkable ocean travelers were heavily exploited for their eggs, meat, and fat, leading to steep declines in many parts of the world.

Thanks to stronger protections, science-based conservation, and the dedication of local communities, green sea turtle populations are recovering in many regions. Today, the species is globally listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List—an encouraging reminder that when we protect the ocean, wildlife can rebound.
