Now in its fifth generation, the Teochew opera troupe performed at dusk at Khoo Kongsi, just steps from Soori Penang.

Behind the performance, hand-painted masks for each character and scripts passed down and annotated by hand, the art form still sung in the Teochew dialect that carried it here from southern China.

Soori Penang has been named winner of the Hotel Conversion category at the 2026 AHEAD Asia Awards, the leading global recognition for hotel design and development. 
 
Presented at a ceremony in Singapore, AHEAD honours the projects and people redefining hospitality architecture across the region. 
 
Designed by Soo K. Chan of SCDA Architects (est. 1995 by Soo K. Chan), the hotel occupies fifteen restored heritage shophouses within George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage enclave, a return to the compound that shaped him.
