For the first time in Southeast Asia, representatives from five regions where POTEHI (Hokkien glove puppetry) continues to thrive will gather in Penang.

Once home to Cantonese guilds, clanhouses, and a century-old Hainanese temple, the street also carries the memory of the mah-cheh (妈姐) — dedicated Cantonese nannies known for their quiet strength and grace.

It was here too that Lam Wah Ee Hospital first began in 1883, serving the community in its earliest days.

Today, Muntri balances past and present — where Straits Eclectic shophouses stand carefully preserved, now filled with boutique stays, cafés, and soft traces of modern life, adding a gentle vibrance to its storied charm.

King Street is a vibrant stretch where you can truly experience the rich diversity of Penang’s three main ethnic communities. It offers a unique glimpse into how different cultures coexist harmoniously as one. Along the street, you might find a traditional Chinese temple on one side, and directly opposite, a small neighborhood mosque—quietly reflecting the everyday balance of faiths and traditions.

Just a short walk further, you’ll arrive at Little India, a lively enclave shaped by South Indian traders and laborers who settled here during the early days of the British-planned city. Today, it remains a cultural hub filled with heritage, color, and the enduring spirit of its community.
