As the full moon rises once again, we gather to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival - a time of gratitude, reunion, and remembrance.

At GTHH, our celebration goes beyond mooncakes and lanterns. We continue a traditional ritual honouring Taiyin Xingjun (太阴星君), the Moon Goddess, reflecting the customs and beliefs passed down through generations.

Our altar is adorned with meaningful traditional elements, from the auspicious Eight Immortals (八仙) cloth to offerings of mooncakes, fruits, flowers, Hokkien-style white mooncakes (福建白皮月饼), Florida water (花露香水), and women’s face powder. Each offering carries its own symbolism, expressing wishes for beauty, grace, happiness, and harmony.

May the moon bring light to every home, warmth to every heart, and togetherness to every family.

Restoring Heritage. Sustaining George Town.

At GTHH, we believe restoration is also part of sustainable tourism. By restoring and adapting existing heritage buildings instead of replacing them with new developments, we help preserve our architectural heritage while reducing the carbon footprint associated with new construction.

A Throwback to Our Mid-July Prayer Ceremony

Taking a moment to look back at the beautiful moments from our Mid-July Prayer Ceremony in George Town.

Through these photographs, we remember the peaceful prayers, traditional rituals, meaningful gatherings, and the quiet moments shared by the community.

One of the fascinating traditions captured during the ceremony is the preparation of paper offerings for the spirits. Alongside paper clothes and spirit money, there are even paper versions of everyday necessities - carefully prepared and divided into sets for men and women, reflecting the belief that the spirits should also have the things they need in their daily lives.

Beyond the ceremony itself, these traditions are part of the living heritage of Penang..... passed down through generations and continuing to bring people together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this special occasion so meaningful.

Keeping the Tradition Alive During Hungry Ghost Festival

During the Hungry Ghost Festival, the team at Georgetown Heritage Hotels comes together to observe an important tradition that has been passed down through generations.

In the late afternoon, our staff begin preparing the offerings. Setting up the tables with an abundance of traditional food, fruits, tea, incense and other necessities for the prayers.

Once everything is ready, Chris Ong, founder of Georgetown Heritage Hotels, leads the team in prayer and offerings to Hoh Hiah Dee (好兄弟), showing respect to the wandering spirits during this special period of the lunar calendar.

For us, these traditions are more than a ceremony. They are part of Penang's living heritage, a way of bringing our team together, respecting our cultural roots, and keeping these meaningful traditions alive for the next generation.
