An inspiring afternoon at Muntri Mews

We were honoured to host a fascinating lecture by Michaela Russel on identifying Qing & Republic Era ceramic motifs and marks. Guests were taken on a journey through history—decoding intricate patterns, understanding symbolism, and uncovering the stories behind each piece.

What made the experience even more special was the warm, homely touch that followed. Guests enjoyed our signature home-cooked crab meat & seafood Nyonya Laksa, lovingly prepared, along with a selection of delightful local snacks. The combination of heritage knowledge and authentic flavours created a truly memorable cultural afternoon.

Moments like these remind us that heritage is not just preserved—it is shared, experienced, and tasted.

Dating back to the 1890s, the historic building of 81 Mews has stood quietly through more than a century of change. Remarkably, it survived two World Wars, preserving the character and craftsmanship of its early days.

In the 1910s, the property was purchased by Chris’s great-grandfather, beginning a family connection that would carry the building’s legacy forward through generations. Over time, the space was lovingly restored and transformed into a boutique venue rich in culture and heritage, while maintaining the charm and architectural elements that reflect its past.

Today, 81 Mews is more than just a historic building. It is a warm and elegant setting where heritage meets modern hospitality. Beyond welcoming guests who appreciate history and culture, the venue has also become a lovely space for intimate events — from birthday celebrations and gatherings to private parties and special occasions — creating new memories within walls that have already witnessed over a century of stories.

During Chinese New Year, our space is filled with a vibrant and heartwarming festive atmosphere.

Glowing red lanterns light up every corner, symbolising prosperity, joy, and good fortune for the year ahead. We’ve also added our own handmade dang long (traditional lanterns), thoughtfully crafted to honour heritage and tradition.

Traditional duìlián (对联) — auspicious red couplets carrying blessings for the new year — are proudly displayed at our entrance, welcoming abundance, happiness, and success. Handmade tassels beautifully complete the décor, adding a refined and elegant finishing touch to the celebration.

Together, it creates a setting rich in culture, warmth, and the unmistakable spirit of the Lunar New Year 🏮
