Tokyo is set to raise its minimum hourly wage to 1,280 yen starting as early as October 1, following a formal recommendation submitted by the Tokyo Local Minimum Wage Council to the Tokyo Labour Bureau on August 5. The proposed 54-yen hike elevates the baseline from the current 1,226 yen per hour and applies to all workers across the capital, including part-time and temporary staff.

This adjustment aligns with central government guidelines and represents a 4.4 percent increase, making it the second-largest wage bump on record for the metropolis. Over the past decade, Tokyo’s minimum wage has risen substantially from 932 yen in 2016, marking an overall growth of roughly 37.3 percent. The pay increase is designed to provide economic relief to household income earners facing persistent cost-of-living pressure and inflation. The Tokyo Labour Bureau is currently completing the required administrative procedures ahead of the official autumn implementation.
