Cherating: Where Backpackers Met
In 1986, Cherating was still in its prime as the premier backpacker haven on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. While Club Med (opened in 1979) brought in the all-inclusive, high-end crowd, the true soul of Cherating resided in the small village of Kampung Cherating Lama.
The Guest House Phenomenon
The legendary status of places like Mak Long Teh Guest House and Mak Des Guest House stemmed from a simple, organic beginning:
• The Pioneers: Cherating was "discovered" by foreign travelers in the 1960s and 70s. Local families, like Mak Long Teh's, simply started sharing their homes, or built basic wooden huts/chalets in their coconut groves by the sea to host the visitors.
• The Vibe: These guest houses were the epitome of "laid-back." The accommodation was simple—often A-frame wooden chalets with shared bathrooms. The price was minimal, making it a mandatory stop on the Southeast Asian 'Banana Pancake Trail' for budget travelers.
• A Family Affair: The "Mak Long" (meaning 'Auntie' or 'Elder Sister') in the name signified the hostess—the matriarch of the family who truly made the place feel like home. She wasn't just a hotel manager; she was the cook, the laundry service, and the neighborhood guide, offering a genuine taste of Malay kampung (village) life.
The Food and Community
Forget fine dining—the real culinary draw was authentic East Coast Malay home cooking. Guests ate communal meals (often incredible curries and fresh seafood) prepared by the family. Its the cardle of Homestay Industry in Malaysia. The communal tables, hammocks slung between coconut trees, and open-air hangouts fostered a unique sense of community.
• Travelers would often stay for weeks, not days, learning a few Malay phrases, trading stories, and even pitching in with small village tasks.
•The guest houses were the social hubs for backpackers and surfers from around the world.
• The atmosphere was the complete opposite of the structured Club Med just down the beach—it was all about slow living, sandy feet, and the rhythm of the waves.
A Lasting Legacy
The Mak Des Guest House tradition, for instance, was carried on and evolved into places like Maznah Guest House (established in 1989), showing how the legacy of the pioneering families continued to shape the Cherating experience well beyond the mid-80s. These names represent the genuine hospitality that put Cherating on the global map.
Cherating in 1986 was a perfect blend of untouched natural beauty and warm, family-run tourism, a true "raw nature gem" that defined a generation of travel.
