Visit Malaysia 2026 is just starting but the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, And Culture (Motac) has already made a decision that did not sit well with many people.

To draw tourists to Malaysia, one of the key events in the tourism calendar is the three-day Water Music Festival starting on 1 May 2026 in Bukit Bintang.

Water Music Festival originates from Thailand’s traditional new year celebration known as Songkran.

Due to this, many felt the water festival doesn’t suit the local scene and has nothing to do with Malaysian culture and values. They believe the festival can bring untoward elements like harassment on the street and also affect nearby businesses.

Instead, netizens suggest promoting a festival that reflects Malaysia’s diverse cultures like Motac’s very own Citrawarna Malaysia, Keretapi Sarong, and Rainforest Music Festival. Events like these showcase the different cultures, arts, dances, fashion, and heritage in Malaysia.
