The haze in Kuching has reached Hazardous levels, with official Air Pollutant Index (API) readings hovering well over 300 to 400+ due to transboundary smoke from regional hotspots and local peat fires.

Breathing air at these levels exposes residents to toxic compounds such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, formaldehyde, and heavy fine particles. Inhaling this hazardous air daily is functionally equivalent to passively inhaling continuous, heavy second-hand cigarette smoke.

Recommended Precautions

Stay Indoors:
Keep doors and windows tightly closed. Run HEPA air purifiers if available.

Wear Protection:
Use N95 or KN95 respirators if going outdoors; standard surgical masks do not adequately filter particles.

Hydrate & Monitor:
Drink plenty of water and seek immediate medical attention if experiencing eye irritation, persistent coughing, or chest tightness.
