Langkawi’s name is believed to be rooted in Sanskrit:

But behind this beauty lies a tale of sorrow and strength: the story of Mahsuri. A young woman wrongfully accused and executed, her dying words cursed Langkawi for seven generations. Many believe the island only began to prosper once the curse had lifted.

In the early 1800s, Langkawi was ravaged by Siamese attacks and left in ruins. Its people were scattered. But they returned — stronger. Rebuilding their home, reclaiming their land, and keeping their heritage alive.
