This mee maker in Pangkor village has been here since before we moved here in 1995. They specialize in mee suah noodles & they are so good. They also produce a selection of other noodles made with carrot, beetroot, spinach depending on availability.
Easy to carry home but careful handing needed to not break the lovely ‘skeins’ of dried noodles.

They open late & they put the noodles out to dry on the side of the road during sunny days only! Always a visual treat!

Rain much needed! Always a bit of a thrill when there’s a storm. It’s windy, blustery, thundery & comes in heavy down pours & light drizzles, in random spurts. The light turns that amazing yellow & theres the feeling of a drama about to happen.
This is great to help wash out the haze. And great to get it over before our guests arrive shortly!
The heavens are bouncing around bumping heads up there. Big thunder as the rain calms down. The temperature has dropped dramatically in the jungle. It’s lovely when it rains!

Hill House at Tiger Rock. Three pavilions. Four rooms & a swimming pool.
Upper pavilion- Purple & Yellow rooms with an interconnecting door
Lower pavilion- Leaf & Shell rooms side by side. No interconnecting door.
Central pavilion- The living Pavilion with seating , dining & kitchenette spaces. There is a fridge for drinks & kettle for making hot drinks.

The design of the Hill House room pavilions is based on a favourite tea estate house we love, whilst the no wall living pavilion is inspired by open pavilions we loved relaxing in on safari in Kenya, years ago.

A short walk to the Pool House, Hill House backs directly onto the permanent forest reserve. There are views across the channel to the mainland & you can watch the sunrise from the living pavilion.
Huge jungle trees surround Hill House & you can view the Great Hornbills as they come in to rest on these trees.

You are surrounded by jungle here, it’s really gorgeous. A really lovely place to relax & take in the jungle, it’s sounds, birdsong, the sounds of a storm in the trees.

It’s ’rubber seed’ season. Such great seed pods! The vintage trees at Tiger Rock are popping & the squirrels, monkeys & jungle rats are feasting on the fleshy, spongy insides of the seeds. Lots of these chewed pods are scattered around every day right now, pulled off by squirrels & monkeys, not dry enough to have exploded to scatter their beautiful seeds everywhere.

Lucky to have this history on the beginnings of rubber on the property! Early on this was a small holders crop on Tiger Rock. The trees are very very old & large. And we mark the passing of time here as they ‘winter’ & all the leaves fall off, when they flush with green leaves anew & then the popping of their seeds.
When you are here, it’s possible to have a go at tapping the trunk & seeing the milky sap that put Malaysian agriculture on the world map.

WHY A LONG RETREAT?

Up to this point I have been running 2 or 3 night retreats. We get a lot done but it is a rush to produce the work, & honestly, its amazing how much everyone works! At the end of the 4 days, everyone has quite an individual portfolio of work. Each artist becomes fully aware of the ‘growth’ in their method & work. Its incredibly satisfying.

However, I have found that because of the rush to get through the different techniques, it is not possible to have the time to really then ‘play’ with the techniques of your choice with everything fresh in your mind, & the materials all available in front of you to form something unique to your own hand.

It is ‘this’ that I really want to facilitate & engage in this ‘long retreat’.

This long retreat is an attempt to really get you embedded & committed to doing the work whilst also leaving a bit of space to enjoy the island & getting into the community a bit more, to explore, document, sketch & experience. Things are changing fast on the island, as in the whole of Malaysia, & Pangkor is special. We know it well. Its a small but unique community. A microcosm of Malaysia & its worth giving it a bit of time.

MARCH 2027: 5 NIGHTS/6 DAYS

Thursday 25th to Tuesday 30th March 2027. Accommodation, all meals, art materials & activities included.

Maximum of 8 participants per retreat.

The Pool House Chalet at Tiger Rock. A little place to call your own!

Two great shots by a recent guest at Tiger Rock. On an afternoon walk to the Dutch Fort & the Floating Mosque, they spotted a wonderfully majestic pair of Great Hornbills, and one of our favourite local birds, a Malayan Fish Owl. These birds were enjoying the afternoon too by the looks of it!

Tiger Rock is lucky to have a long list of resident birds on, around, around & passing through the property. Pangkor Island is well known for the Southern Pied Hornbills, but over the last few years especially, the population of Great Hornbills has been steadily increasing & we see them on a daily basis at Tiger Rock.
The Malayan Fish Owl is also a resident. From the first day on site over 30 years ago, we have seen them regularly, alone, in pairs & with chicks.
A birders dream to open a window & have a family of them right on in the palm at your window!
