❗MAJOR UPDATE❗

Bakau Camp will now be managed as Bakau Nature Camp.

We fully support the new management taking over supporting our dreams of sharing a semi-wild camping experience to campers. There are a lot of new things in the pipeline to improve the site over the coming months and we are excited to see where this will go.

Link for booking will be in the bio.

If you've been to Bakau Camp before, you may have noticed these not so friendly looking fellas on the ground. These are Kongkiak or Macrotermes carbonarius. Here's some fun facts about them.

Skyscraper Architects: They build massive, complex mounds that act as air-conditioned "super-organisms."

Mushroom Farmers: They don't eat wood; they farm a specific fungus (Termitomyces) inside their nest as their primary food.

Daytime Swarmers: They have dramatic, black, cloud-like mating flights during the day, unlike most nocturnal termites.

The Egg Machine Queen: The queen becomes a giant, immobile egg-laying machine, producing thousands of eggs daily for decades.

Living the Name: Carbonarius means "coal-like," describing their distinctive dark black color.

No these aren't ants and no they are not friendly. We've cleared most of them from parts of the camp lots, but they're still around in other places scattered around the site.

Do keep a close watch for these, especially at night or when you're going around off the cleared paths.
