Kundasang is a small town in the district of Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia and is renowned for its vegetables and plantation farm. Kundasang has grown into a popular holiday destination for tourists from around the world and as a short holiday destination for Sabahan especially during weekends.

Cheapest way to travel from the capital of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang is by express bus. The bus station is located at the Terminal Inanam, Kota Kinabalu. Price at approximately RM20 per person, the long-distance bus is considerably economic and convenient choice for travelers especially the backpackers. Alternatively, you may also opt for a 12-seater minibus from Padang Merdeka (Merdeka Field), Kota Kinabalu at approximately RM20 per person as well. The journey from Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang takes about 2 hours.

Many homestay and lodges available at Kundasang or Mesilao Village for tourists to choose. As for backpackers and adventurous travelers, you may consider the only camp stay at Kundasang, the Singgah Mata Camp. The camp site is located at Kampung Cinta Mata (Cinta Mata Village) and offers six camps that complete with sleeping bag, mat and pillow at a very reasonable price. Basic amenities like kitchen and toilets are also available. You will have a chance to experience the cloud free beautiful Mount Kinabalu view from the camp site especially in the morning if the weather permits.

Kundasang is a bit cold at night. I would suggest to bring along jacket or wind breaker and lip gloss to avoid dry lips.

Among the recommended places to visit in Kundasang are :

Desa Dairy Cattle Farm – the attraction here is the farm that produce most of Sabah’s dairy products. Dubbed as the New Zealand of Sabah, the farm is suitable for families as it offers attractions like calves & goats grass or milk feeding, learn how milk is process and enjoy the nice fresh milk as well as ice cream by Desa Cattle. Spend sometimes to admire the stunning scenery of Mount Kinabalu, overlooking the green pastures.

Sosodikon Hill – the hill is 1465m above sea level and located at Kampung Kauluan (Kauluan Village). Nice track up the hill in the morning for a spectacular glimpse of sunrise and for a breathtaking view of Kundasang.

Meragang Hill – 2232m above sea level and the hill is another attraction for hikers. Fee will be imposed according to the package selected and it is inclusive a guide. Registration can be made at the office that is located at Kampung Mesilou (Mesilou Village).

Vegetable Farms – available along the way when traveling from Kundasang town to Mesilou village.

Kundasang Town – a giant replica cabbage can be seen at the roundabout of Kundasang town. This represents what Kundasang is famous. Many stalls available along the roadside for those who wish to purchase the highland vegetables. There are local open-air eateries as well. Try their local food, Sinalau Ayam (Rice with Chicken) or Sinalau Daging (Rice with Beef) as recommended by the locals.

Kinabalu Park (the foot hill of Mount Kinabalu) – Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site, located approximately 6 km from Kundasang town. Kinabalu Park is also the main starting point for summit trail to Mount Kinabalu.
