Sometimes you arrive somewhere not knowing what to expect and end up not wanting to leave.

For me this was the case with which I booked for a 3 night stay.

Nestled at the edge of the sanctuary this is one of the most beautiful places to stay if you want a true jungle experience with mod cons like air conditioning!

The staff are all so friendly and their smiling faces throughout the day make you feel so welcome.

As for the food, well it is the best I have tasted in 3 weeks of travelling around Malaysia and that includes the 5 star properties I have stayed in ( this one is 3 stars but absolutely could teach the big resorts a thing or two about customer service and food standards).

Of course the resort is home to Borneos many different wildlife species and simply walking around the boardwalks to the main restaurant is a wildlife experience in its own right. From frogs to lizards and birds to insects you’ll see them all. And if you are as lucky as me you’ll see orangutan hanging from the trees as you enjoy breakfast ( this isn’t guaranteed as they are wild and do as they please) but I saw them this morning and it was the highlight of my trip.

So if you are heading to Sabah in Borneo to discover the wildlife in Sepilok be sure to book a stay - you won’t be disappointed 😊

Honeymoon part 3 - Sandakan, Proboscis Monkey sanctuary, our first wild orangutan spotting & night walk to see the nocturnal animals.

We hadn't been in Sabah Borneo for more than a few hours when we saw our first wild orangutan, a big male sat up in a tree. The picture isn't great because he was too far away for a phone camera to get a decent shot but we watched him for a while and he just sat & watched us back!

Proboscis Monkey feeding time was fun & a female came to say hello 😊

We spotted some rare nocturnal animals on our night walk, including a Slow Loris and Western Tarsier

Our first lodge was lovely

If you plan to visit Borneo, Sepilok has to be on your itinerary, especially if you love nature and wildlife. We recommend spending at least one full day here to explore all it has to offer.

Things to do in Sepilok:

🦧 Visit the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre where you can see these beautiful animals up close. Feeding times are at 10am and 3pm. During this time you can watch from a viewing platform as large numbers of semi wild Orangutans gather to eat. The cost for entrance is Rm30 for international tourists and Rm10 to bring a camera.

🐻 Head to the Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Just next door to the orangutans is a similar project for the rehabilitation of sun bears. It’s common to visit here after the orangutan centre where you can observe the sun bears from a raised platform. The entrance fee is Rm50 and you can wander the area at your own leisure.

🍃 Explore the Rainforest Discovery Centre. The RDC is a great way to experience the forests without going too far out your comfort zone. The night walk we did here was one of the best we have done on the trip so far - we managed to spot flying squirrels, tarsier and the slow loris among other amazing animals and insects. The area also has an impressive 620m Rainforest Skywalk suspension bridge to view the forest from the canopy. Alongside this, the RDC has a range of walking trails which range in length and difficulty. The entrance cost is Rm20 for international tourists and Rm30 for the night walk per person.
