The first World Elephant Day was observed in 2012 with a highlighted agenda in bringing an alarming plight of Asian and African pachyderm.

A day that play an important role in raising and spreading awareness about the concerning issues faced by elephant today.

From habitat loss, poaching, human conflict and human exploitation. It’s really highlighted the plight of this beautiful creature today. An urgent call for all us, telling us that this gentle giant really need our help!

Happy World Elephant Day 2021!

Southern Pig-Tailed Macaque actively seen along the riverside in the peak hour of the afternoon.

Communally foraging and socialising in a selective spots such as forest floor and among the lower level vegetation, before slowly ascending on higher elevations to call it a day.

Like most highly social primates in Lower Kinabatangan, it favoured a tree top along riverside, settling down through the dark hours and retreat when the sun rise the next day, restarting the daily shift.

Orang Sungai, an indigenous people’s of Kinabatangan river had been depending on this waterway for their living for a centuries.

Extracting edible marine life for their daily intake of protein using a few traditional method had been part of their unique lifestyle.

One of those method is by using a cast net or throw net.

A circular net thrown by hand in such a manner, it allowed the net spread like a parachute, reaching the surface and start to entangling any helpless fish or prawns inside the net. Soon after, the net hauled back and it quickly secured the catch by closing the edge of the net with a help of a sinkers around it.

Casting this huge net are not an easy task to execute, it requires a high level of expertise in this very field.

Our recent group had the opportunity to observe and learn and it was an honour for our local to show our own living lifestyle.
