What is Ratu Lepa in Semporna?

Ratu Lepa is the pageant associated with Regatta Lepa, one of Semporna’s most important cultural celebrations. The festival celebrates the maritime heritage of the Bajau community, with the traditional lepa boat as its central symbol. These wooden boats are beautifully decorated with colourful fabrics, carvings and traditional ornaments.

The Ratu Lepa title represents more than beauty.
The queen becomes a cultural figure who helps showcase and preserve Bajau traditions, including traditional clothing, Igal-Igal dance, customs and the community’s connection to the sea.
