A message from your Vista Bonita family

If you've ever watched a humpback breach off Guinjata Bay, snorkelled beside a turtle at the reef, or simply sat on our beach and felt small in the best possible way — this one's for you.

Our coastline is facing a real threat. There are plans for offshore seismic testing along Mozambique's coast — the process used to search for oil and gas beneath the seabed. It works by firing loud airgun blasts into the ocean every few seconds, day and night, sometimes for weeks or months on end. These blasts can disturb feeding and breeding, damage the hearing of whales and dolphins, and harm the smallest creatures at the base of the ocean food chain — the ones everything else here depends on, including us.

We're not against progress. We're asking for caution. A petition has been launched calling for an immediate, temporary moratorium on seismic blasting in Mozambican waters until proper, independent research has been done — until the impact on whales, dolphins, turtles, dugongs, fish and coral reefs is fully understood, and until coastal communities like ours, tourism operators and fishing families have actually been consulted.

This bay has given us so much — it's given many of you unforgettable holidays, and it's given our staff, our neighbours and our community a livelihood. It's whale season right now, and out on the water this month you can still see exactly what we stand to lose.

We asked for rain; and Mozambique delivered!

After years of hoping and praying for good rains, this season has been generous almost to a fault. The bush is green, the water table is recovering, and for that we're deeply grateful. But rain this heavy has a shadow side too: it drags everything downstream and dumps it on our doorstep; our beach.

Over the past weeks, our stretch of Guinjata Bay has seen a real surge in plastic washing up: bottles, packaging, fishing debris, the lot, all carried down by swollen rivers and stormwater. It's heartbreaking to see, especially on a beach we work so hard to keep wild and clean for the turtles, the birds, and everyone who walks it barefoot each morning.

Right now, our response is simple and very hands-on: our team is out there daily, hand-raking and hand-picking litter out of the sand, load by load. It's slow, honest work; and it matters. But there's only so much a small team can manage against this much debris.

That's where our fundraiser comes in. We're raising funds to bring on extra hands from the local community to help with the cleanup; fair, paid work that puts money directly into Guinjata Bay households while giving our beach the attention it needs. We'd also love to buy (or build) a proper beach sand-sifting rake, a wheeled, tow-behind sifter like the ones in our photos, which would let us clear far more ground, far more thoroughly, than raking by hand ever could.

Today is International Youth Day, and here at Vista Bonita, it's one that genuinely means something to us.

We live and work on a coastline that depends entirely on the health of its ocean, its reefs and its wild spaces. And when we think about who cares most fiercely about protecting all of it, we keep arriving at the same answer: young people.

It's the kids from the local community who grow up knowing this bay as home. It's the younger travellers who arrive determined to tread lightly. Both bring something the rest of us can lose sight of along the way — urgency, and a genuine belief that things can still change for the better.

At an eco lodge, we try to live those values every single day. But it's the young people around us who remind us why they matter in the first place.

Happy International Youth Day. May the generation inheriting this earth also be the one that heals it.

Happy Friday, fellow Facebookers!

This morning, Guinjata Bay gave us one of those sunrises that stops you in your tracks; the sky over the Indian Ocean turning fiery orange and pink, the water still glassy before the day gets going, and just the sound of the waves to keep you company. Mornings like this are exactly why we love calling this stretch of coast home.

We owe you an apology, friends, it's been quiet on here for a while, and that's not like us.
The truth is, we've had our hands full. Cyclone Gezani left its mark on Vista Bonita, and these past weeks have been about hammers, paint, and patience rather than photographs and posts. Paul's been up ladders more than he'd like to admit, and between us we've been rebuilding, repairing, and putting the lodge back together piece by piece.
But here's the lovely part: on the rare afternoon when the work stops and the light goes soft and gold, we've been stepping out onto the dune with a cup of something warm; and there they are. The humpbacks, right on cue, rolling and breaching just offshore, as if to remind us why we do all this in the first place.
The cooler months here in Guinjata have a stillness to them we treasure — fewer voices, softer light, and the whales putting on the best show in the bay. It's been our quiet reward at the end of long days.
We'll be back with more updates soon, and we can't wait to welcome you back to a lodge that's a little more resilient for what it's been through. Obrigada for your patience with us.

There's something quietly magical about Guinjata Bay in the cool season.
The air has that crisp, clean edge to it — the kind that makes you pull a wrap a little tighter around your shoulders as you step outside, coffee in hand, and then stop. Because the sky ahead of you is doing something extraordinary.

Every morning right now, the sun rises over the bay in the most breathtaking shades — deep corals bleeding into soft golds, the water catching it all and holding it like a mirror. It lasts only minutes, but those minutes feel like a gift. We never take them for granted, not even after all these years of waking up here.

And out beyond the bay? The humpbacks are loving it. Cooler water temperatures are exactly what they're after, and whale season is well and truly alive along our coastline. There are sightings up and down Inhambane Province, and there is genuinely nothing quite like watching one of these magnificent creatures breach against a sunrise sky.

World Environment Day — and honestly, it means something a little different when you live on the edge of the ocean.

From where we're standing right now, we can see the reef, hear the birds, feel the sand. This place isn't a backdrop for us — it's home. And it's a constant reminder of exactly what we're here to protect.

At Vista Bonita, we've always tried to tread lightly: recycling, upcycling, locally sourced materials, and a deep respect for the land and sea that make all of this possible. It's not always easy in a remote corner of Mozambique, but it's always worth it.

The whales are back! Paul and I could not be more excited.

Every year, as the Indian Ocean cools and the waters around Guinjata Bay shift into their quieter, bluer winter mood, the humpbacks return — and every year, without fail, it stops us in our tracks.

There is something about witnessing a humpback whale that simply cannot be prepared for. The scale of them. The unhurried grace. A creature that can weigh 40 tonnes moving through the water with a kind of effortless elegance that makes you feel, just for a moment, that the world is much larger and much more extraordinary than your day-to-day life allows you to remember.

They come here to this stretch of the Mozambique coast to breed and to rest — calving in the warmer months further north, then moving south as the season turns. And right now, they are passing through our waters. Sometimes close enough that you can hear the breath before you see the blow.

If you've always meant to come during whale season, this is your year. Mornings on the deck with coffee, scanning the bay for that first dark shape. An afternoon on the water, watching a mother and calf surface alongside the boat. These are the moments that quietly become the ones you talk about for years.

Season runs June through November. We still have availability for the July school holidays, but it moves quickly.
