Fresh pao' every morning...nothing better? Take me back to Moz!!
We know there are local methods that give the X factor..but here we go...
Mozambique Pão (or Mozambican bread) is soft, fluffy, and delicious, often paired with stews or grilled meats. Here's a simple recipe to make it at home:
Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 packet dry yeast (around 7g)
1 cup warm water
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup warm milk
1 tablespoon butter (optional, for richness)
Instructions:
Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let it sit for about 10 minutes, or until the mixture is bubbly and foamy.
Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center. Pour in the activated yeast mixture, warm milk, and vegetable oil. Mix everything together until it forms a dough.
Knead the dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until it's smooth and elastic. You can add a little more flour if it’s too sticky.
Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Shape and second rise: Once the dough has risen, punch it down to remove air bubbles. Divide it into smaller balls (about the size of a fist). Shape each ball into a round bun and place them on a greased baking tray, leaving space between them. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Bake: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Brush the tops of the buns with melted butter (optional) for a golden finish. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and they sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Cool and serve: Let the bread cool slightly before serving. It’s perfect with stews, grilled meats, or even just butter and garlic.
