Mozambique’s coastline remains one of the most pristine and untouched in the world, creating an ideal nesting habitat for sea turtles.
During nesting season, female turtles come ashore under the cover of darkness. Leaving the ocean behind, they slowly make their way up the beach to dig nests where they can lay as many as 300 eggs. While laying, they enter a deeply focused, trance-like state, making it essential that visitors avoid bright lights and loud noises that could disturb them.
Once the nesting process is complete, the turtles carefully cover their eggs with sand before returning to the sea. Witnessing this remarkable natural event is both moving and unforgettable.
Around 55 to 65 days later, the hatchlings emerge from their eggs, dig their way through the sand, and begin their incredible journey towards the ocean.
