A little bit of excitement yesterday when Anton was called out to Omatjete area by Namibia Nature Conservation. A South African Rock Python (3.6m) had made its home too close to a small settlement. Together with Ralph from Nature Conservation, Anton captured the 🐍 and savely relocated it in one of the swamps in the Ugab River. 🙌🏼

Another cool bird that can be found in the Uis area is the Ludwig's Bustard.
They usually travel only in pairs except the breeding season, then they will have on average one chick, seldom 2. They roam the grassy plains of the Namib escarpment and are near endemic.
They hardly make any noise, except a mating call done by the male.

Being a mostly dry riverbed, the Ugab river still boasts some big trees. Mostly Anna Trees (faidherdiba aldiba) and also the invasive Prosopis trees, but also Camelthorn trees (acacia erioloba). This is a haven for many bird species, among them the Grey Loerie bird or Bush Police (de. Lärmvogel)
With their cool punks when alerted, they will make a big noise when something is approaching.
Stories from the Angolan Bush wars mention these birds as well, when soldiers would be notified by their calls when terrorists would approach.

Various other birds can also be found in the river that could keep a birder happy for days!

We don't always see the Ugab elephants on our Elephant drives, but when we do, it is a fantastic experience.
Since they are free roaming and are capable of moving quite a lot of kms per day if they want, sometimes they are just out of reach for us!

Under the expert guidance of Anton, you can be sure to have a great time in the Ugab river, one of Namibia's ephemeral rivers.
