A Rare and Heartwarming Sight in Tsumkwe 🦛🌿
A family of four hippos — now six! — has made a rare and remarkable appearance in the Tsumkwe area, a region not typically known for these water-dependent giants. Their presence is a testament to the power of community, compassion, and environmental stewardship.
Thanks to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the Kwando Carnivore Project, and the dedicated efforts of Pine and Diekie Pienaar of Tsumkwe Lodge, these hippos have found a seasonal refuge.
To support their survival, a solar pump has been installed to ensure a permanent water supply. During the dry season, a petrol generator is used to pump water through the night, helping sustain the animals when conditions are harsh. These local heroes also deliver grass and monitor the water source to keep it viable.
The natural waterhole has become a lifeline not only for the hippos but also for other wildlife in the area — creating a rare oasis in the heart of the bush.
This is more than just a wildlife story. It’s a moment — a celebration of harmony, resilience, and the beauty of shared care for nature.

Dear Colleagues,

We wish to urgently bring the following matter to your attention.

Tourists entering or leaving via the Dobe Border Post, to or from Botswana must have a hard copy of their Visa documents on them.
The Dobe Border Post is situated 50 km east from Tsumkwe town. This Border Post has no electricity, no internet, nor do they have a computer to check the validity of tourist visas.

We have had guests arriving from the Botswana side, they were rejected entry to Namibia because they did not have a hard / printed copy of their travel Visa.

This is a huge inconvenience. please alert your clients accordingly.

Dear Visitor to Tsumkwe Country Lodge,
The Nyae Nyae Pans close to Tsumkwe are filled to the brim with rain water. The roads in and around the Pan are soaked and saturated.
Be aware – Don’t drive into this area without the necessary 4x4 gear and backup of a second or third vehicle to assist.
Its almost a 100% guarantee you will get stuck in the black cotton soil if you attempt the adventure on your own.
The Pan has transformed in to a birders and scenic paradise which will continue to look spectacular for months ahead.

Kindly take note that if you enter the Pan and surrounding area, you do it at own risk. If your vehicle does get stuck the Nyae Nyae Conservancy will not come to your rescue. They don’t have vehicles nor the equipment to assist.
