🌿 A Living Fossil of Namibia – The Welwitschia! 🇳🇦

Hidden among Namibia’s rugged, rocky landscapes grows one of the strangest and most remarkable plants on Earth — the Welwitschia mirabilis.

It may look like it has many leaves, but a Welwitschia actually grows only two leaves throughout its entire life! These leaves keep growing from the base, becoming split and weathered by the harsh desert conditions.

Some Welwitschias are believed to live for more than 1,000 years, with exceptional specimens estimated to be even older. 🤯

Seeing one growing naturally in this dry, unforgiving landscape is a wonderful reminder of just how extraordinary Namibia’s desert life really is. 🌿🏜️

🐘 DESERT-ADAPTED ELEPHANT FACT | WHY ALL THE DUST?

A little dust goes a long way when you live in the Namibian desert. 🤎

One behaviour you’ll often see among our desert-adapted elephants is dust bathing — throwing sand and dust over their bodies with their trunks.

But it’s not just for fun!

🌾 Did you know?
A coating of dust can help protect an elephant’s sensitive skin from the harsh sun and biting insects. After bathing or finding water, elephants will often cover themselves in sand or dust, creating a natural protective layer over their skin.

And when an entire herd gets involved, it can create scenes just like these — elephants disappearing into a golden cloud of Namibian dust. 🐘✨

Seeing these incredible animals moving through such an arid landscape is always a reminder of just how beautifully adapted they are to their environment.

🦅 BIRDLIFE FACT | BLACK-CHESTED SNAKE EAGLE

Another impressive visitor to the skies above Brandberg White Lady Lodge. 🌿🇳🇦

This beautiful raptor is an immature Black-chested Snake Eagle (Circaetus pectoralis) — a powerful bird of prey perfectly adapted to life in Namibia’s open landscapes.

🐍 Did you know?
As their name suggests, snake eagles specialise in hunting snakes and other reptiles. Their incredible eyesight allows them to search the landscape from high above or from a favourite perch before swooping down after their prey.

Black-chested Snake Eagles can also be seen hovering while hunting, something rather unusual for an eagle.

Young birds look quite different from the striking black-and-white adults, gradually developing their characteristic dark head and chest as they mature.

Another incredible glimpse of the diverse birdlife found around the lodge. 🦅✨

Graceful, watchful and always ready to strike. ✨

Meet the beautiful Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus caeruleus), captured in flight at Brandberg White Lady Lodge.

🔍 Did you know?
These striking birds of prey are excellent hunters. They can often be seen hovering almost motionless in the air, using their incredible eyesight to scan the ground below for prey.

Their diet consists mainly of small rodents, making them an important part of the natural ecosystem. They may also feed on insects, reptiles and other small animals.

With its pale plumage, contrasting dark wing markings and unmistakable bright red eyes, the Black-shouldered Kite is certainly one of the more striking hunters to look out for around the lodge. 🌿
