Today at Green Elephant Cottages, Uis, we celebrate the magnificent desert-adapted elephants of Namibia — gentle giants that make our part of the world truly extraordinary.

These incredible animals roam freely through the dry riverbeds and vast desert landscapes of our beautiful country. Seeing them in the wild is not just a wildlife sighting — it is a privilege and an experience that stays with you forever. 🇳🇦

THE OLD MAN OF THE DESERT

Somewhere out in the Namib Desert lies an old man.

He doesn’t move much.
He doesn’t talk much.
And he absolutely refuses to die.

The Welwitschia plant is basically Namibia’s oldest grandpa.

Scientists say some Welwitschias are over 1,000 years old.
Which means this old oom was already lying here long before borders, governments, tourists, selfies, and load shedding.

And what does he do all day?

Nothing.

Just lying there on the desert stoep…
watching generations come and go.

No gym.
No supplements.
No skin-care routine.
No motivational podcasts.

Just two leaves, endless patience, and pure Namibian stubbornness.

The sun burns him.
The wind beats him.
The desert tries to kill him every single day.

But like every proper old grandfather, he simply squints at life and carries on.

Honestly, the Welwitschia is not a plant.

It’s that old Namibian grandpa who has seen everything, survived everything, and still refuses to leave his chair.

And if this old man ever plans to invade Uis…
we are safe for at least another 800 years.
