After the first decent yet localised rain shower of the year at Ameib Guesthouse & Camping , the termites started swarming and the next morning hundreds upon hundreds of yellow-billed kite (German: Schmarotzermilan) arrived in the skies to feast on the termites. In the evening they roosted in all the trees surrounding the guesthouse, making for some stunning captures against the sunset.

Interesting fact: yellow-billed kite arrive in south-western Africa with rain/ weather fronts and concentrate on termites and other insects swarming after the first localised rain falls.
Known in German vernacular as “Regenvogel” translating directly to “rain bird” they are always seen as a good sign for impending rain. So let’s hope for lore rain in the next days and weeks 💪🏽

Proud to be part of this private nature reserve encompassing the Erongo Mountains and conserving the unique indigenous fauna and flora of this Inselberg-complex!

The Erongo Mountain Nature Sanctuary is a private nature reserve in the Erongo Region of Namibia. The Erongo Mountain Nature Sanctuary (EMNS) aims at protecting the indigenous fauna and flora of the region, as well as reintroducing species that were originally part of the natural biodiversity.

The EMNS is made up of numerous privately owned land units, whose owners decided to contribute their land to this project. This has led to the unprecedented situation that almost all inner fences and individual border fences have been removed, to allow the game animals freedom of movement.

This large area - encompassing almost 180 000 hectares - which the Erongo Mountain Nature Sanctuary encompasses, is now almost completely “fence-free” and is therefore wholly available for the protection and conservation of the occurring animal and plant species. Within these 180 000 ha the game can move freely. There is merely a fence on the borders of the EMNS at places where there are no mountains, to prevent the reintroduced Black Rhinoceros from leaving the area into neighbouring farmland.

The old farmhouse at Ameib Guesthouse & Camping.
Built in 1909 it is a true piece of history. In 1945 the verandah was closed, but it was opened back up in 2019 and just gives so much more flair.
Today the reception of Ameib Guesthouse & Camping is in one of the rooms of the old house, which is symbolic of Ameib’s simplicity.
Come visit Ameib to experience one of the first Guest establishments in Namibia set in awe-inspiring natural surroundings.

~ Philipps Cave ~

One of the most famous historical sites of bushmen paintings in Namibia.
The cave was officially discovered in 1940 by Albert Schomschor and Emil Philipp, who owned Ameib from 1939 to 1972.
It is the oldest national monument in Namibia, proclaimed in 1951.

Inside the cave there are various bushmen paintings, amongs others the famous white elephant.

The view from the Philipps Cave is as mesmorising as the cave itself.

You can reach the Philipps Cave after a 45-60 minute hike through the breathtaking rugged terrain from the Ameib Guesthouse.
