Dog gets grand burial in Lagos.

•Service of songs, condolence register, seven-gun salute for animal, as Army Band plays at funeral

• He was my first child, friend, business partner, says owner

From the obituary notice, it was obvious that something atypical was about to happen. Posted in many places around Ikeja, it left many with mouths agape in utter bewilderment.

The obituary read: Transition: With gratitude to God for a life well spent, we the family of Tracy, Lion. Quincy and Adriano wish to announce the sorrowful departure of our father, Dr. Papilo Cannan that died on November 17, 2014, after a brief illness. Aged 15, may his gentle soul rest in peace.”

Well, nothing really strange in the obituary. Except that the deceased was – wait for it – a dog!

Last Saturday, November 29, Oshifila Street, Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos State, was agog, as a dead dog, a male Alsatian, popularly known as Dr. Papilo in its lifetime, was given a befitting burial by its owner.

A day before the burial, a service of songs was held for the dog at Cannan Hotel, Ikeja.

At the burial, there was plenty to eat and drink, just as guests were thoroughly entertained by the Nigerian Army Band. A detachment of mobile policemen at the event also gave the deceased dog a seven-gun salute.

Many sympathisers and guests showered accolades on the dog, paying glowing tributes to the animal in the condolence register.

Dog-owners, military personnel, police officers, veterinary doctors and many others thronged the venue of the ceremony, which commenced at 11am that Saturday. Many passers-by abandoned their initial plans and made a detour to Oshifila Street to witness the unbelievable funeral.

The street and many parts of Ikeja, the capital of Lagos, came to a standstill for some hours. Many could not believe that it was a dog that was being buried. But the owner insisted that Papilo was more than a dog, describing the canine, as a special breed.

Immediately after its death, a condolence register was opened for the dog in front of Cannan Hotel, where Papilo has served, as a security guard for 10 years.

Some of the tributes in the condolence register read: Papilo, you were great, You will remain forever in our memory, We miss you Papilo, Sleep well, What a brave dog!

The owner of the dog, Prince Keneth Edet Ani, who serves with the Nigerian Army in Ikeja, told the reporter that his affection for his late dog was unconditional.

Papilo’s remains were interred in a four-feet grave and decorated with roses. The grave is beside the hotel where the dog served till its demise.

Ani described the dog, as his business partner, first child and a friend that travelled with him across the country. He said the dog was an intelligent soldier and a security expert that fought a good fight before its departure. He said he could not reward the dog enough for all it did for him in securing his business and protecting his family for years.

The man, who has four daughters from his late wife, recalled that the dog was their only partner when he newly got married 15 years ago. In all the years that Papilo lived, he said there were only few important ceremonies that the dog did not attend with him.

According to him, the little way he could reciprocate Papilo’s unquestionable love for him and his family as well as the dog’s bravery, especially regarding his business and environment was to give the animal a befitting burial. He said he could not quantify the money he spent on Papilo, which he bought at three months, before the dog’s death at the ripe age of 15.

“My wife and I stayed together for some time without a child. Suddenly, people started calling us Papa and Mama Papilo. The dog travelled with me to Jos and Maiduguri. While in Maiduguri, it was trained and used to hunt bombers. It was a unique dog. In the real sense, it was my first child. When I lost Papilo, I felt sad the same way I felt when I lost my wife. The dog was just too close to me,” he informed.

Ani, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Cannan Hotel, was neatly dressed in a black suit for the occasion. He commended all the guests for attending the burial and for commiserating with him on the demise of his much-loved dog.

The chief mourner, a graduate of Accounting from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said he was happy that his pet died peacefully, after a brief illness. He prayed to die the same way his dog died, pointing out that Papilo’s death was not tragic.

Manager of the hotel, Onyeka Obi, who was around when Papilo breathed its last, told the reporter that the dog was sick and did not eat for about two weeks. Papilo’s veterinary doctor administered drugs to the dying dog but all treatment offered proved abortive.

Also praising the dog’s security consciousness, its owner said: “Papilo confronted armed robbers sometime ago and gave one of them a serious injury. The robber could not run further, and was later caught by the police. Everybody knew Papilo in this area. I am missing the dog, and the other six dogs at the hotel are also missing Papilo because it was like their father. Here, we treat dogs like human beings. We give them the best food you could think of.”

Chairman of the occasion and a priest with the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star Parkson Edjeketa described the dog’s burial as a celebration of “our brother, Papilo.” He said the event was in line with God’s will for humans to show love and care to animals that He, God, had placed in human custody. He praised Ani’s uncommon love for his departed dog.

The Coordinator, Nigerian Dog Association, Ndubisi Faisal Amuka submitted that the name, dog, was not an accident but a deliberate divine arrangement to show the animal’s relevance to mankind. He explained that God watches over the front, while the dog watches from behind. He saluted Ani’s uncommon action of organising such an event for his pet. He stated that the chief mourner had set a record in Nigeria, urging other dog owners to take a clue from him.

“Dogs are unique creatures. They are our friends. I am talking of dogs that are specially bred, not just any dog. I am so happy to be part of this occasion because it is not easy for anybody to come up with such an idea. If you can show love to a pet, it shows you can do better with humans. This organiser has just lifted the benchmark. You will witness more celebrations of dog’s deaths henceforth,” he assured.

Dr Dotun Ransome-Kuti also at the event, said what Ani did was great. He joined others to champion the crusade of treating dogs like human beings. According to him: “I think this is the first time anybody is doing something of this magnitude. This may be the start of new things in our society that other people will begin to follow. The best friend you can ever have is a dog. Dogs shows unconditional love. All it knows is that you are his friend. If you beat a dog, it would still be your friend. However, you can get the best from a dog only when you first show love to the pet.”

Ekwukoma Peter, a dog owner, commended the organiser’s courage, saying that it was a call to other dog owners to show more love to the animal. He stated that the event was amazing and remarkable. He promised to conduct a burial ceremony when his dog passes on. He admitted, though, that he might be unable to do so on a grand scale like Ani.

Chris Ekpo, who lives the on the same Oshifila Street, said Papilo looked gentle but was quite brave as a security guard.

For Ralph John, Papilo was brave. His words: “I cried like a baby when the dog died. Since I was born, that was the first dog that I would ever encounter that would behave like a human being. Immediately Papilo knows you, it becomes your best friend.”

A minute of silence was observed in honour of the dog.

One of the guests, who identified herself as Mary, said she was too astonished to utter a word.

“I don’t really have anything to say, because I am totally surprised. That is why they say, wonders shall never end,” she told the reporter.

Ex-Minister Ticked Jonathan For Another Term

NIGERIAJULY 8, 2014-NO COMMENT

Former Minister of Culture and Tourism and chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Ambassador Frank Ogbuewu has said that President Goodluck Jonathan deserves another term in office in 2015.

Speaking in Abuja in an interview, Ogbuewu, a one-time Nigerian Ambassador to Greece noted that those kicking against the reelection bid of Jonathan are only doing so for selfish reasons.

According to the PDP stalwart, anybody interested in the growth and development of Nigeria should know that Jonathan has done so well to the admiration of Nigerians to deserve a second term.

Ogbuewu said: “As far as I am concerned, not minding whatever some people are saying about him, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has done excellently well and he is eminently qualified to seek for another term in office. You are wrong to say that most Nigerians are of the belief that he is a clueless and non-performing President. It is not the belief of most Nigerians; rather, it is simply some few people who perhaps also want to be there that are saying that. It is those who does not appreciate good thing and only interested in themselves and not the general good of the country that will not want Jonathan to go for a second term. Otherwise, Jonathan performance in office has been quite impressive and wonderful. Despite the serious daunting security challenges, he didn’t lose focus. He has remained determined and committed to the actualization of his transformation agenda and he is delivering in his campaign promises. So, why can’t he ask for another term? Jonathan has worked very hard to improve the country’s economy. Our roads are now better. He has made innovations in the power sector which will certainly bring about improvement in power generation and supply. In fact, we are beginning to see some level of improvement and I believe that with time, power will become completely stable. We only need to be patient because this problem of power has been there for a very long time. But Mr. President is doing his best to change the situation. Also, after many years that our rail system has been in the doldrums, the Jonathan-led government has brought it back to life. Is it in the area of agriculture or education? As a matter of fact, his administration has made significant impact on the various segments of the country’s economy.”

While urging Nigerians to elect people that will have the interest of the country at heart in 2015, the former Minister said: “In all the various positions that will be contested for across the country, we should give our votes to only those that are God-fearing and we are sure that they are going to affect our lives positively. We must not sell our conscience in any way. We must not allow people to deceive us. They will use everything to lure you. But please make sure you vote the right people. That is the only way you can enjoy the true dividends of democracy. I equally want to urge our youths not to allow themselves to be used for any form of violence before, during and after the elections. Any politician that want to use you for thuggery, please tell them to go and use their children. Your life as a youth should be very precious to you, and so, you must not succumb to the antics of the politicians who would want to use you to achieve their selfish goals. As for INEC, the electoral empire, they must leave no stone unturned to ensure a transparent, free and fair election in 2015. Adequate preparation must be made on their part to give Nigerians the best in the conduct of 2015 general elections.

Boko Haram kills Emir of Gwoza, two others survived

By Yusuf Alli, Managing Editor, Northern Operation. On May 30th, 2014 at 15:49
Filed under: News, News Update

Gunmen, suspected to be Boko Haram members, on Friday killed the Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Idris Timta barely six weeks after coming out to protest against the dastardly activities of the sect.

But two other Emirs escaped death by the whiskers in what appeared a pre-meditated ambush by the insurgents.

The lucky ones are – Emir of Askira, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibn Muhammadu Askirama and Emir of Uba, Alhaji Ali Ibn Ismaila Mamza.

Also, a policeman in the convoy, who was shot at by the insurgents, survived the ambush.

According to a source, the Emir of Gwoza had been on the hit list of Boko Haram since April 13 when he came out openly against Boko Haram for turning his domain into their main base and crippling economic activities in the area.

A security source said: “In spite of the security ring around the late Emir, the insurgents had been on the trail of him with several threats against his person.

“They did not like his audacity in spite of the fact that they were operating at his doorsteps. The statement of the Emir hurt the insurgents who waylaid his convoy on Friday while on his way for the burial of the Emir of Gombe.

“We are suspecting that they might have acted on intelligence on the movement of the Emirs. This development has fueled internal collaboration with the insurgents.

“You can see why the war against the insurgents is difficult in the North-East because you do not know who is working or not for Boko Haram.”

A statement by the Secretary to Borno State Government, Ambassador Baba Ahmed Jidda, gave graphic details of how the Emir was killed.

The statement said: “The Emir was killed around 9am today following a bloody attack by some gunmen believed to be members of the Boko Haram along Tashan Alade on the way to Biu town, headquarters of Biu Local Government Area in Southern Borno State.

“The late Emir was in company of the Emir of Askira, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibn Muhammadu Askirama and Emir of Uba, Alhaji Ali Ibn Ismaila Mamza, all of whom drove in the same vehicle as they headed to Biu to pick the Emir of Biu so they could all drive in convoy to Gombe State to attend the funeral of the late Emir of Gombe who is scheduled for burial in Gombe on Friday.

“The late Emir of Gwoza had visited his counterpart, the Emir of Uba on Thursday and passed the night in Uba ahead of their planned trip on Friday.

“The two Emirs were this morning, joined by the Emir of Askira. The three drove in the same vehicle with the intention of going to Biu to be joined by their counterpart in Biu.

“Unfortunately as they were driving in convoy to Biu, they were ambushed by gunmen around Tashan Alade, soon after passing Garkida.

“The gunmen came after the convoy, specifically targeted the vehicle conveying the three Emirs and opened fire.

“The Emir of Gwoza was unfortunately killed by the attackers while the Emirs of Askira and Uba escaped unhurt. A policeman in the convoy was shot by the attackers but he survived the attack.

“The late Emir was in the first class status following his recent elevation by Governor Kashim Shettima.

“The late Emir was indeed a great man who worked very hard to promote peace and progress in Gwoza. He was a pillar and one of the rallying points in Borno State. He visibly worked very hard in the search for peace in Gwoza since the insurgency began.

“Borno State Government is terribly shocked by this incident. The Government prays that Allah admits the late Emir into aljanna Firadaus and give family, members of the Gwoza Emirate Council, the people of Gwoza, the State Council of Chiefs and the entire people of Borno State the fortitude to bear this very traumatic loss especially at a time the state is still dealing with equally disturbing issues related with security challenges in the State.

“May Allah grant us accelerated and lasting peace in Borno State and rest of Nigeria.”

RELATIONSHIP: 10 undeniable signs she’s trying to flirt with you

I’m going to lay something out right off the bat here: There is no definitive answer to the “Is she flirting with me?” question.

Women are individuals who each have their very own unique way of attracting you, loving you and driving you totally insane. That’s just what we do, man. However, when it comes to flirting, there are a few signs that you should be sure not to brush off as just a casual pleasantness. Women are individuals, but we are also as obvious as men are oblivious, so let me help you get laid

She’s Chatting Up Your Friend But Keeps Her Eyes On You
I’m about to introduce you to a really ridiculous thing called the “Cheeseburger Principle.” Think about when you’re hanging out with your friend and you see your friend eating a cheeseburger. Even if you’re trying really hard not to eat meat or something, just watching him eat that burger makes you want it even more. Right? OK, so some terrible advice columnist took this so-called “principle” and applied it to flirting.
Is it true? Yes. It’s true. Sometimes a woman will flirt with your friend just to try to entice you, but she’ll make sure it’s always within your vision and will direct most of the energy toward you. I’m not a fan of this. I think it’s backward, game-playing nonsense, but some people do play this card.

She Keeps Walking By
If it seems like she continues to walk by with apparently no sense of why she’s there, she’s there for you. She’s trying to get you to notice her with this obvious sign she’s flirting, and you need to say something endearing. By walking past repeatedly, perhaps out of her way, she’s telling you she wants your attention, but she’s making you work for it.

She Draws Attention To Her Mouth
A woman’s mouth can be extremely seductive, and we’re fully aware of this fact. Some of the effective signs she’s flirting are: applying lip gloss, running her finger across her lip or using the straw in her cocktail instead of just sipping from the glass. There is a tremendous amount of flirtatious energy tied up in a woman’s lips. Lips are flirting tools that are both potent and effective.

She Singles You Out
If a woman finds a way to get you away from the rest of the social gathering you may be in, whether it’s a crowded bar of unfamiliar people or an intimate dinner party of friends, she’s trying to tell you she wants to be alone with just you. We will use really odd excuses to get you alone sometimes, so don’t be thrown off by the unconventional nature of the request. If you’re into it, go for it.

She Mimics Your Body Movements
For some reason, when human beings are interested or infatuated with each other, they begin to pick up certain traits from the other person. If she’s mimicking your mannerisms — the way you hold a drink, or the way you’re sitting — she may very well be interested in gaining your attention. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all.

She Plays With Her Hair
While relatively simple and commonplace, in the right hands, a woman’s hair is a versatile weapon. When trying to get your attention, she may twirl her hair or let it cascade in front of one eye, in an attempt to create a sense of come-hither mystery.

She Touches You
If a woman is talking with you, casually at a party or a bar, and she finds a reason to touch you (other than breaking her fall or punching you in the face), she is sending you a big, fat signal. This is the oldest, most obvious trick in the book. When she reaches out and lightly touches your forearm or shoulder, hand or wrist, you know you have a live one. You need to reciprocate, because there are few clearer signs she can provide.

She Makes Eye Contact
Just like birds are attracted to shiny things and fly toward them, people tend not to be able to look away from something they find interesting and attractive. You can feel when a woman is eyeing you. She’s not always going to come up and talk to you, but if she keeps giving glances in your direction, glance back and see if anything connects.

She Enters Your Personal Space
Personal space, by definition, is where others are not. When a woman enters this space, say, brushing past you with a glance and a smile, she’s inviting a response with this sure sign she’s flirting. The caliber and character of her invasion will give you cues as to how you should respond.

She Approaches You To Talk
Her approach is her strongest flirting card. It allows her to maintain eye contact, play with her hair, lightly touch you and mimic your mannerisms, among other flirting techniques. If she has come over to talk to you, she wants to know what you’re all about. It’s the first step in the interview process called dating.

President Jonathan Is Nice But Surrounded By "Incompetent Frauds" - Sanusi
LAGOS – Nigeria’s former Central Bank chief, Lamido Sanusi on Sunday described the president who ousted him as a simple man trying to do well who has been undermined by incompetent and fraudulent aides.

Sanusi was suspended by President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday over alleged financial misconduct, a move seen by many analysts as politically motivated. Sanusi has accused the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) of misappropriating $20 billion (14.5 billion euros), allegations that earned him powerful enemies across the government.

In an interview with AFP in Lagos, Sanusi said many of the people advising Jonathan are sycophants who do not speak frankly or honestly about the extent of corruption in government.

“When you sit with President Jonathan himself he appears a nice simple person who is trying his best to do his best,” Sanusi said.

“His greatest failing obviously is that he is surrounded by people who are extremely incompetent, who are extremely fraudulent and whom he trusts.”

Sanusi learned of his removal from office while in Niger on Thursday and immediately returned to Lagos, where agents from the Directorate of State Services (DSS) seized his passport.

On Friday, he secured a temporary protective order from the Federal High Court in Lagos barring Nigerian intelligence agents from the DSS or police from arresting him.

“I thought taking away my passport was the beginning of infringement on my fundamental human rights,” Sanusi told AFP, explaining why he had already sought court protection.

While no charges have been filed against him, Sanusi said he was prepared for whatever attacks may come.

“That we are here today means that I have taken the decision that I will face the consequences of whatever I do,” he said.

He said his “fierce independence” had been an annoyance to the government since 2009, culminating with his sustained, public attack on the NNPC, widely seen as the epicentre of corruption in Africa’s top oil producer.

“If I am sacrificed in whatever way, my freedom or my life… if it does lead to better accountability it will be well worth it,” he said.

Goodnight Col. Lucky Mike Torey

on February 16, 2014
The Nigerian Army has produced a good number of officers whose overall contributions during and after their sojourn in the service have continued to withstand the test of time. Many years on, these officers and gentlemen have continued to forge ahead at other levels of the society doing things that the discipline and orderliness associated with their earlier engagements, aptly, prepared them for later in life.

A prime example of one such officer and gentleman that was nutured and honed by the Nigerian Army was Colonel Lucky Mike Torey. Torey or LMT as he was fondly called died in November 2013 after a very brief illness. He was buried in Ekpan near Warri, his home town on Friday, January 24, 2014. I had known LMT for many years even before he came to public office. He was a member of the 11th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy and later an officer of the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps reputed to be one of the elite corps of the Army and its combat arm of decision.

What surprised me so much was the manner of his death. We had always been in constant touch together. A week before he died, we spoke on phone for some time and he was full of life. He did not betray any illness as we joked and remembered old times. That day, he told me he was planning a reception slated for December in Warri. We ended our discussion with a promise that we were going to talk again to finalise arrangements for the reception. That was the last time we spoke until a week after when the news of his death filtered into town.
The news was broken to me by his former Aide-de-Camp Brigadier-General Benson Akinroluyo, a very fine, respectful and unassuming officer. At the time Torey left Enugu as governor, Akinroluyo was a Captain. He was then popularly known as Captain Benson. I am sure he was promoted a General shortly after the demise of his former boss. With Captain Benson at that time was Lieutenant Azeez Feruke who was the Chief Security Officer, CSO. Both Benson and Azeez were like Siamese twins who worked hand in hand with mutual respect for one another. Azeez retired as a Lieutenant-Colonel and now works with the United Nations in Ethiopia.

That Sunday morning when Benson called me to break the sad news, he was on his way to his station in Bauchi after attending the burial ceremony of the father of the immediate past, Chief of Army Staff, General Azubuike Ihejirika. I could not believe what I heard. But that was the truth. LMT was dead. I later called the wife who had relocated to Abuja from their base in Jos in the wake of the sad development. She confirmed the news and kept on muttering the word: “Let’s thank God.” Whenever I pose a question to her in a bid to know the details of what happened, she ended whatever explanation with “let’s thank God.” I later reached out to some of our mutual friends who were equally dazed by the news of his sudden death.

We will never see LMT in the physical sense again, but he would be gloriously remembered by those who came across him while his earthly sojourn lasted. A core Armoured officer, it is to Colonel Torey’s credit that he took part in military exercises in various parts of the country even when the trappings and administrative requirements of office as a Military Administrator tended to slow him down. He was never deterred by this as he was variously involved in the ones carried out under the aegis of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu where he served last as a Military Administrator before he was posted to the Infantry Corps and School, ICS, Jaji, Kaduna State, as Training Team Leader in September 1996. Also during his tenure in Enugu, he hosted and provided logistics support for the Lieutenant to Captain Examination that was held in Enugu.

Before he was posted to Enugu in September 1994, Colonel Mike Torey served for nine months in Ondo State as Military Administrator between December 1993 and September 1994. He had earlier served at different times as Acting Military Governor of Plateau State between 1989 and 1991. Though his tenure in Ondo was brief, just nine months, it was eventful and filled with landmark achievements, some of which are enduring and are still visible today. It is on record that he constructed the Oba-Ile and Ijoka Roads in Akure, the state capital and renovated some others, thereby giving the historical town a facelift. He had a good working relationship with and mutual respect for the Obas and Chiefs who played a complementary role in the dissemination of information about government actions and activities. In appreciation of their important role at the local level of governance, Colonel Mike Torey ensured that the first-class Obas were allocated befitting and fuel-efficient cars to ease their mobility and enhance their status. These cars were maintained and serviced at state expense during his short tenure.

When Colonel Torey was redeployed to Enugu State in 1994, he took along his vision and mission of a benevolent military governance imbued with some goals that included the empowerment of the womenfolk in areas such as self-employment and governance including leadership roles. Indeed, he appointed Barrister (Mrs.) Justina Offiah, the pioneer female Senior Advocate of Nigeria, (SAN), as a State Commissioner. He also brought on board diminutive but brilliant Laureta Ukeagbu, daughter of late Justice Aniagolu, who was always glued to her laptop, as Economic Adviser. At the local government level, he encouraged a female contestant for the chairmanship seat of Nkanu-West Local Government Council to be focused and positive about her aspiration. The female contestant won overwhelmingly in the council election which was held on zero-party basis across the states of the federation.

A consummate political strategist, Colonel Mike Torey (in his two areas of posting) developed a working rapport with the political class and tapped from their positive experiences in the general interest of the people.

It is to his eternal credit that he was able to identify, nuture, mould and utilise the innate but dormant leadership and administrative qualities in many of the aides he recruited in his quest to assemble a performance-oriented A-list team and turn over the fortunes of the state, positively. As a complement to this, Colonel Torey built a formidable rapprochement with the elder statesmen and women in his area of administration. A prime example was his close interaction with Chief Jim Nwobodo; Chief Christian Chukwuna Onoh and Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, who were former Governors of Enugu State and other prime political juggernauts like Senator Ben Collins Ndu; Chief Gbazuagu Nweke Gbazuagu; Chief Hyde Onuaguluchi; Prince Arthur Eze etc.

A traditionalist to the core, Colonel Torey knew the place and role of the traditional institution especially in Igbo land in the entrenchment and sustenance of peace and harmonious co-existence in all the component local governments of the state. He established a cordial relationship with the traditional ruling class which he held in high regards. At his behest, regular interactive meetings were held to find a common ground on thorny issues that his administration had to contend with in the day-to-day governance of the state. Colonel Torey’s relationship with some of the Igwes like Igwe Edward Nnaji, Igwe Charles Abangwu and Igwe Mamah cemented the peaceful tenure he enjoyed before he was redeployed to purely military duties.

As we celebrate the life of a man who placed selfless service and commitment to noble ideals above other considerations, my heart and feelings goes to his wife, Olushola and their two children, Yomi and Deji. May God grant his amiable soul eternal repose! Amen.
