COCOA RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF NIGERIA (CRIN) MONTHLY SEMINAR SERIES HELD ON 9TH MARCH, 2026
The Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) held its Monthly Seminar Series on Monday, 9th March, 2026, as part of its continuous effort to promote research development, knowledge sharing, and innovation among staff and stakeholders.
The seminar featured two presentations delivered by distinguished researchers from different divisions of the Institute.
The first presentation was delivered by Dr. Festus O. Olasupo of the Plant Breeding Division. His presentation was titled “The Use of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) to Verify Genetic Identity and Diversity in Cocoa Gene Banks.” In his presentation, Dr. Olasupo highlighted the importance of molecular tools, particularly Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), in confirming the genetic identity of cocoa varieties and assessing genetic diversity within cocoa gene banks. He emphasized that the application of SNP technology enhances the accuracy of germplasm identification, supports effective conservation strategies, and improves breeding programs aimed at developing high-yielding and disease-resistant cocoa varieties.
The second presentation was delivered by Dr. Adesida of the Economics and Extension Division. His topic was “Analysis of Cocoa Production During the 2023–2024 Price Boom in Oluyole Local Government Area, Ibadan, Oyo State.” Dr. Adesida examined the effects of the global cocoa price increase during the 2023–2024 period on cocoa production in Oluyole Local Government Area. He discussed how the price boom influenced farmers’ production decisions, farm management practices, and income levels. The presentation also highlighted challenges faced by cocoa farmers during the period, including input costs, labour shortages, and market fluctuations, while recommending strategies to sustain production growth and improve farmers’ profitability.
The seminar provided an avenue for interactive discussions, knowledge exchange, and constructive feedback from participants. Attendees commended the presenters for their insightful contributions and emphasized the relevance of the topics to cocoa research, production, and policy development in Nigeria.
The Monthly Seminar Series remains an important platform for strengthening research collaboration, enhancing staff capacity, and promoting scientific advancement within the Institute.
