Efunsetan Aniwura was a wealthy and influential 19th-century Yoruba woman who rose to become the Iyalode (female leader) of Ibadan. Born in Abeokuta, she migrated to Ibadan and built a powerful commercial empire, owning hundreds of slaves and controlling vast farmlands and trade networks, especially in to***co and slave trading.

She was known for her firm leadership, harsh discipline, and wealth. Her power rivaled that of many male chiefs, which led to political tensions. Eventually, these tensions culminated in her being deposed and executed in 1874 under the order of Aare Latoosa, the military head of Ibadan at the time.

Her life represents both the height of female power in Yoruba society and the patriarchal backlash against such influence.

AFRICA/YORUBA HISTORY🌍

Orompoto was the first and only female Alaafın of Oyo. She was the sister of her predecessor, Eguguojo. She assumed the throne in 1554 because there was no male successor to her elder brother at the time.

Legend has it that she cut off her breasts (mastectomy) and put on men's clothing to look like a man and for the Oyo Mesi to accept her as Alaafin.

In 1557, Alaafın Orompoto (the custodian of the va**na that kills evil plots, the king with the great gift, the king with the flabbergasting gift) strengthened Oyo's military might. She imported horses from as far as Timbuktu in Mali and had over 1000 horsemen.

She did tie leaves on the horses' tails so that when they went a fighting, the leaves swept the ground after them to cover trails of the horses' prints.

Alaafın Orompoto was a skilful commander and a tactical leader. She was brave and won many battles. During her reign, Oyo regained its military prestige and was feared across the south of Niger. She died in the battle of Ilayi in 1562.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE YORÙBÁ PEOPLE CALLED ONKO IN ỌYỌ STATE?
They're otherwise known as Òkè-ògùn.
The Òǹkò, otherwise known as Òkè Ògùn people, they are a Yoruba people group inhabiting the areas drained by the upper Ogun river in Northwestern Oyo state in Nigeria.
They were historically a part of the once expansive Oyo empire, but are distinct from the Oyo proper.
The Onkos inhabit an area of tropical savannah climate type characterised by moderate rainfall with double maxima.

The area is home to the Old Oyo national park, one of Nigeria's largest conserved areas.
All Onkos without exception claim direct descent from Oduduwa the mythical/legendary progenitor of the Yoruba race.

The Onkos speak a Northwestern Yoruba dialect (NWY) similar in structure to Oyo Yoruba, but with some distinct peculiarities in pronunciation such as extra nasalizations of words Unlike Standard Yoruba, where nouns do not begin with moraic nasals, both vowels and consonantal moras may begin nouns in Onko Yoruba. As a matter of fact, nasals and the high front vowel occur in different contexts in these two dialects.

Cognate forms which begin with nasal in Onko surface within the standard dialect. For example:

Ile (House) becomes Nle, Ise (work) becomes Nche, Ibo (Where) becomes Mbo, Iro (Lie) becomes Nro. Etc.
Another peculiarity of the Onko dialect in contrast with standard modern Yoruba is the presence of the [CH] sound, which in standard Yoruba is vocalised as [Sh] or [S].

This peculiarity/uniqueness is not limited to Onko alone, but can be found throughout western Yorubaland, including the Ibarapa people, Egbados, Ketus, Idaashas, Shabes, Etc. For example, the Yoruba greeting for a diviner (Babalawo) "Aboru Aboye Abo shishe" is rendered "Abo chiche" in Onko.
