She came close to the top last year...

This year, she's back for more.

Mrs. Mercy Jemgbo emerged as the 2nd Runner-Up in the 2025 National Maize Cob Challenge, and she's back, more determined than ever.

Here is a photo from her SC649 maize farm, where she's giving her crop the care and attention it deserves.

And yes... she has already registered for the 2026 National Maize Cob Challenge!

So what can cause yellowing of maize leaves?

Here are five common possibilities:

1. Nutrient deficiency – Your crop may not be getting enough of an essential nutrient.

2. Water stress – Too little or too much water can cause leaves to lose their healthy green colour.

3. Disease – Some plant diseases can cause yellowing as one of their early symptoms.

4. Insect damage – Certain pests weaken the plant and may lead to yellowing.

5. Natural ageing – As maize grows, some older leaves naturally turn yellow and die off.

The important thing is this:

YELLOWING LEAVES DON'T ALWAYS MEAN YOUR MAIZE NEEDS FERTILIZER.

Many farmers see yellow leaves and immediately think:

"My maize needs fertilizer."

It feels like the obvious answer.

But it isn't always the right one.

Yellow leaves are not a diagnosis.

They're a symptom.

Sometimes the problem is deficiency of nutrients such as nitrogen, sulfur, magnesium or zinc.

Sometimes prolonged drought or waterlogging could prevent roots from taking nutrients.

Sometimes insects are damaging the plant before you notice them.

Sometimes disease is already spreading through the field.

THE FARMER WHO MAKES THE BIGGEST PROFIT ISN'T ALWAYS THE ONE WHO SPENDS THE LEAST.

Many farmers think the secret to making more profit is reducing their expenses.

So they buy the cheapest seed they can find.

The cheapest fertilizer.

The cheapest chemicals.

Then they hope for a bumper harvest.

Farming is not about spending the least.

It is about getting the highest return on every naira you invest.

Imagine two farmers spending almost the same amount on land preparation, labour, fertilizer and spraying.

The only major difference is the seed they plant.

One harvests 20 bags of 100 kg size.

The other harvests 50 bags of 100 kg size.

Who made the better investment?

Not the one who spent less.

The one who got more from the same land.

That is what Return on Investment looks like.

The best farmers don't ask,

YOUR MAIZE FIELD MAY NOT BE AS HEALTHY AS IT LOOKS

A green field doesn't always mean everything is fine.

Pests, diseases and nutrient deficiencies often begin quietly. By the time the signs become obvious, your crop may already be under stress, affecting its growth and yield.

That's why regular farm scouting is one of the most important field management practices every farmer should adopt.

When scouting your farm, pay attention to:

Signs of pests and diseases before they spread.
W**d growth that competes with your crop for nutrients, water and sunlight.
Crop colour, vigour and growth to identify possible nutrient deficiencies.

Don't wait until you notice obvious damage. Start scouting your farm from two weeks after planting and continue regularly throughout the growing season.

Early detection gives you the best chance to protect your crop and maximise your harvest.

LAST YEAR, WE ANNOUNCED MRS. Mercy Jemgbo AS THE SECOND-PLACE WINNER OF THE NATIONAL MAIZE COB CHALLENGE.

She went home with amazing prizes.

Many people congratulated her.

But very few people asked the question that really mattered.

What made her stand out?

One of the first things we noticed was her approach to land preparation.

Before planting, she applied cow dung to improve the soil before tilling.

When the rains became well established, she didn't delay.

She planted Seed Co's SC 649.

Yes...

SC 649.

Many people assume that only SC 719 can produce award-winning results.

Mrs. Mercy proved otherwise.

With the right management, SC 649 competed with the very best—and earned her a place among the winners.

Going forward, she maintained the recommended spacing of 25 cm between plants and 75 cm between rows.

She applied fertilizer at the right time.

She kept weeds under control.

She monitored her field consistently.

When harvest came...

Her 12 hectare maize field produced an impressive 9 tons per hectare—about 90 bags from every hectare.

That's what the National Maize Cob Challenge is really about.
