Sights from the 13th Edition of Gigho Aghofen (Palace Watch)
Ghigho Aghofen (Palace Watch) is a significant cultural event in the Warri Kingdom, which celebrates the traditional handing-over ceremony where the a particular Community (outgoing community) transfers responsibility to the incoming community to watch over the Royal Palace (AGHOFEN) for the next quarter.
The event was initiated by Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR the Olu of Warri Kingdom, in December 2021, as part of his efforts to promote the cultural heritage of the Itsekiri people.
The first edition of Ghigho Aghofen was held on December 18, 2021, and has since become a quarterly event, with different communities taking turns to watch over the palace .
Ghigho Aghofen is not just a cultural event, but also an opportunity for the communities to showcase their rich cultural heritage, traditions, and history.
The event features various cultural displays, including dances, music, and theatrical performances.
The initiative has been successful in promoting unity and social bonding among the communities in the Warri Kingdom.
It has also helped to educate people about the history and cultural significance of the Itsekiri people.
The significance of Ghigho Aghofen lies in several key aspects:
1. **Cultural Promotion and Preservation**: The ceremony provides a platform for vibrant displays of Itsekiri culture through dance, music, fashion, and traditional performances. It also welcomes participation from other ethnic groups residing in the kingdom—such as the Urhobo, Igbo, Yoruba, Ijaw, and Ilaje—highlighting the diversity and unity within the region.
